Hi, I would like to know if there is a way to boot a live cd such as ubuntu via tftpd over PXE. I found a few tutorials that shows how to do this with a linux box running tftpd using NFS, but I dont know how to do this using Windows since windows does not use the NFS protocol.

If you have any suggestions please do let me know.

I know how to do that already. I want to run the live CD from network, not the installer.

Maybe you could add a NFS server to Windows.
At tleast in NT 4.0/Win2K there was a free one from MS.

Cannot say if it may work on other "Windows" (expecially since you don't say "which" winodws you are using :hyper:):

There are also a number of third party (AFAICR COmmercial) solutions.

Thanks alot wonko for the link. I managed to get it to work with xubuntu, crunchbang linux, and drbl. However, I have one problem when using it. whenever i boot the above mentioned live cds, the boot process stops at the following line for 10-20 minutes:

ipconfig: /tmp/net-eth0.conf: SIOGFINDEX: no such device.

[8.318626] tg3: eth0: Link is up at 100Mbps, full duplex.

[8.318687] tg3: eth0: flow control is on for TX and on for RX.

[8.319030] addrconf(netdev_change): eth0: link becomes ready

tftpd outputs the following in the log every 10 seconds before OS eventually boots:

Rcvd DHCP Discover Msg for IP 0.0.0.0, Mac **:**:**:**:**:** [16/09 18:13:15.562]

DHCP: proposed address 192.168.2.50 [16/09 18:13:17.062]

3404 Request 2 not processed [16/09 18:13:17.125]

anyone know why this may happen?

The problem with Linux distribuitions to boot over PXE is when the distro looking for a media ( the rootfs) in /dev/cdrom, /dev/sr0, when you boot from pxe only initramfs is loaded, when the installer kernel load and initfsram loaded will still looking for this devices... The CDROM device phisically dont exists, because you are booting over PXE !

You need to remake your initramfs with entirely rootfs inside.

I know one distribuition that works entirely in RAM... its Slitaz..

www.slitaz.org

its only 30 mb and have version with firefox, depends on your needs, this can be helpfull to your boot PXE enviroment. !

Good luck
