Hi,
i am reading since several weeks everything what can i get here :hyper:

With the great postings/topics of amalux, lancelot and the others, i am able to build my configurations without issues.
btw: i gave up to build under Win7 x64, still some problems with wimpack, but not a real problem; just more a cosmetic one ;)

I'm so close to the super-beautificated flashdisk, which contains everything what i am dreaming for..
Win7_x32, Win7_x64, several WinXps, everything with or without driverpacks, linux distros, and just two files on the root (grldr and bootmgr) and just one folder with a lot of subdirectories...
The last missing one, is an individual and well build LiveXP.
From performance reasons, i decided to go on LiveXP instead to choose one of the other LivePEs.

I am interested to understand what the procedure/differences of LiveXP:
Actually I didnt find any good FAQ/Docu for wimpack and wimboot.

What is wimpack doing?
Whats the difference between with and without wimpack?
Make it senses to use UPX Scripts, if i use wimpack?
What is Wimboot for?
Do it makes sense to use wimpack and wimboot together?

What is wimpack doing?

wimpacks mainly "programfiles" and optionally some "sub folders inside systemfolder" to gain space

Whats the difference between with and without wimpack?

you get what wimpack does or not.

Make it senses to use UPX Scripts, if i use wimpack?

depends, if some files at systemfolder upxed than some sense, else not much. (except wimboot, when wimpack used with wimboot not much sense)

What is Wimboot for?

wimpacks ALL and make final bootable from result wim file. When used with wimpack than wimboot wimpacks rest (= "systemfolder")

Do it makes sense to use wimpack and wimboot together?

yes. you get a small wimboot image which loads faster with smaller ram requirement (compared to wimboot alone) with still wimpacking all.

Thx for the explanation and the effort.
Just a feedback in own words, to check if i catched it :hyper:
As conclusion:
  • wimpack is compressing %programfiles% per AIK to save space
  • UPX dont makes so much sense, if u'll wimpack the target.
Either u shouldnt UPX if u use wimpack+wimboot together
  • Wimboot is a kind of Wimpack++ which is packing everything,
anyway, using it together will result a smaller bootImage, which
will load faster and will require less ram, then with just wimbooting alone (without wimpack)

@Lancelot or Galapo
Sorry to gate crash this post. Delete this post if you feel it is inappropriate.
Have you got WimPack and Wimboot to actually boot a Live PC? I can only get WimPack and WimBoot to work together on a Virtual Machine. On a Live PC, boot process freezes before the desktop is shown with cmd.exe never completing (monitored with Task Manager).

@Lancelot or Galapo
..

May I either?
I already ran it a few days before on a netbook without any problems.
Just one thing was noticable: in the wimboot plugin, if u choose the ISO creation, it didnt work. Without wimpack no issues, the ISO get created.
