I guess no need to ask Nuno again today to set all options available to ALL NON-Admin members unless he changes his decision of not providing available optionality of today as a next step, since as a consolation price: in some near future, everybody must only get new blabla..skin :)......

All I can tell you at the moment is:

There is more than one way to skin a cat

(you might want to appreciate the intentional pun ;))

and:

I will do such things,--
What they are, yet I know not: but they shall be
The terrors of the earth.

If colors are way too light, icons look bad or anything else, then write up here so that theme designer can read your feedback.

We are in August and this design will keep on changing until December.

---------------------

available optionality

I would prefer to see this as an "avoidable optionality". My recommendation is that you use the current opportunity to influence how the site will look like.

This invitation is open to everyone.

There are also requirements set for the new design that will later be made available to public in full detail.

No amalux, this is not a "consensus by elimination of options", this is "avoidable optionality".

I would prefer to see this as an "avoidable optionality".

:w00t:

@Mikorist
well an affair having a good looking title saying "Meeting Africa with our site members" probably Darfur may help :). Besides I am not sure who will survive, even being under 40, I feel most over 40 will survive with their experiences when they update their bullet proof jackets ;) But in the end, who knows, it may help

@Nuno

My recommendation is that you use the current opportunity to influence how the site will look like.

There is no single post from me which try to influence how the site look like.
I commented on your decision of removing option on site (and learned already removed some options from none-admin users) which all I learned by luck.

Please do not misinterpret my posts and Again good luck on "new design".

Lancelot, please read again what I've written in the previous post.

I'm inviting all members to influence the design and contribute with feedback.

A consensus is a rare event but that doesn't mean we can't learn from other people's comments and put them into practice. It would be easier to do like MSFN and just change the theme overnight but we're giving months ahead of time to properly evaluate a new skin for our forum.

Sure, but the whoever that takes the decision whether to put the comments and advice into practice should NOT be biased.

I mean, you can stomp your feet all the time you like, but to have something pleasing to the eye, and readable, due to the characteristics of displays and of the human eye, the background HAS to be:
  • non-white
  • non-black
  • non-redish
  • mattish
Which leaves us with a very small number of grades of:
  • light, pastel blue
  • light, pastel green
  • light, pastel cream/tan/beige

Surprisingly all the "default" board skins tend to belong to one of the above colour ranges, but NO, it has to be something different, and new (and possibly also l33t)

Classical theme won't be available.

Oh, that's a sad thing to hear. I really appreciate the classic theme.

My recommendation is that you evaluate the current skin at dnx and provide us feedback regarding what you would like to see changed.

Well, I guess my feedback would be that it doesn't look like the current classic theme and needs to be adjusted to look like it!

Regards,
Galapo.

Good comment, let's keep this in mind for the future design.

;)

OK, let's continue, then.

Since the background, as said HAS to be a lightish "dull" colour, ANY other element has to be a darker shade of the SAME base background colour, to avoid the BeOS (now Haiku ) look:
http://www.haiku-os.org/
A very simplified colour matrix (unrelated) is here:
http://grub4dos.sour...hp/Color_Matrix
as anyone can easily see, the best readability is given by a dark colur (dark blue) on a light background (light grey).
As said light shades of green, beige, or, better blue, will give the same high readability.

Since we have the advantage (in the "classical", actually "Webber" current skin) of a suitable light blue as background, let's see what happens with Fonts (the colour is ON PURPOSE chosen as having a relatively LOW contrast with the background, in order to make it LESS easily readable):

  • This is some text in Arial.
  • This is some text in Arial Black.
  • This is some text in Arial Narrow.
  • This is some text in Book Antiqua.
  • This is some text in Century Gothic.
  • This is some text in Comic Sans MS.
  • This is some text in Courier New.
  • This is some text in Franklin Gothic Medium.
  • This is some text in Garamond.
  • This is some text in Georgia.
  • This is some text in Impact.
  • This is some text in Lucida Console.
  • This is some text in Lucid Sans Unicode.
  • This is some text in Microsoft Sans Serif.
  • This is some text in Palatino Linotype.
  • This is some text in Tahoma.
  • This is some text in Times New Roman.
  • This is some text in Trebuchet MS.
  • This is some text in Verdana.

Now, which of the above appears readable notwithstanding the low contrast?

Easy enough:

1.This is some text in Arial.
4.This is some text in Book Antiqua.
16.This is some text in Tahoma.
19.This is some text in Verdana.

Which confirms all the literature (and everything ALREADY said) about the topic, on screen a sans serif, proportional, slightly spaced font is the most readable:
http://www.boot-land...?...=6431&st=31
http://www.boot-land...?...=6431&st=57

@Nuno

If possible, please specify what are the parameters that we can be expected to be adjusted how much can they be expected to be adjusted, e.g.
  • font color
  • background color
  • elemental organistaon & inter-elemental spacing etc.

Otherwise, Galapo is perfectly right is saying

Well, I guess my feedback would be that it doesn't look like the current classic theme and needs to be adjusted to look like it!

Because, some other day, I'd like to see a "Penguin walking across the screen" & some other member will urge to have a "Flying fairy" or "Eifle tower" to be put on the navigation panel. Surely, these requests are un-processable. So, instead of being "subjective" by asking "how do u want the new skin look like", be "objective" by strictly specifying all available options.

Looks ok to me although its a little bland compared to the classic skin. What's more important than how it looks is the content and how its structured.

Naaah, NOT a penguin (not really because of the penguin ) but it could gave the impression of the board being "Linux dedicated" or "linux only".

Besides, penguins are "old style", we need a more updated release of an animal as mascot/symbol of bootland, something like the squinocerous or the pumel:

Linuxquestions.org has a static Penguin standing on the left. So, taking that idea a little ahead, why not ask for moving one as it can stand for the dynamicity & progrss of our community?

If we're going to pick a mascot then I'd vote for gambuzinos - a very strong and popular creature in my country.

Upper northeast I think the German people call them as Elwetritsche. They are delightful if you use the right spices to cook them, albeit it has been a while since my last hunt and they're getting harder to find outside rural areas.

Well,if we go for mascots like, rhinoceros/dinoserous/squinocerous/Penguin(already reserved by Linux guys)/pumel/gambuzinos etc. people will either think that we have been tires of creating boot-disks & need a respite from that or boot-landers have certainly transformed into animal lovers ;)

Hmm.. in the video I see that they brought the animal from the US. Is the Italian sarchiapone related to the american Jackalope or does it follow a more local roots of genealogy closer to the Elwetritsche?

Naah, the American jackalope is MUCH BIGGER, our local sarchiapone is relatively small (when compared to the griffin and to the minotaur) but still big enough to scare the hell out of gnomes....;)

Some italian emigrants took with them their (domestic) sarchiapones to the US in the 19th century, but AFAIK they were very careful that there was NO cross-breed reproduction.

Generally the discussion is passing my interest. I'm not interested to discuss details here. Shortly said: It is not important whether the text is e.g. in "dark pink" on a "light green" background or whatelse.

I have only one concern. My eyes have the same age like me, that is currently 66 years. And in order to offer my brain something usable, my eyes want to have some 'usable' pictures.

A picture "dark white" on "light black" (as I found in my bycicle vacation last year) is nearly unreadable for me.
Theme.JPG

Other "Request": When changing the themes etc. please think on specials like codebox, which currently are treated very different, depending on browser.
(I sometimes have a page with 'unlimited' width, when it contains a codebox).

As a result: As long, as a 'visible' classic theme remains, as long as this classic theme shows codeboxes fitting in the page, and as long as the classic theme appears as "Standard", I do not worry about 1000 other offerred themes.

Well, if you want us to suntan, the whitish is allright :D , if you even minimally care for our eyes, SOMETHING THAT IS NOT WHITISH, AND MATT :) , would be a better choice :) .

I really don't get the idea. :D

You are perfectly free to choose whatever stupid colour you like for a background. :)

You are also perfectly free to ask for suggestions. :)

You are even perfectly free to ignore them. :)

You are finally perfectly free to avoid motivating any foolish choice you will take. :)

What you should avoid doing is to say that you are following the suggestion and DO EXACTLY THE THING THAT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED YOU SHOULD NOT DO (like using an almost white cream and a oh-so-slightly-darker-than-white-beige as main background colours).

It is quite frankly offending our intelligence, besides showing a total lack of respect for the people that tried posting a few basic suggestions.

Should you be - by chance - affected by a form or another of daltonism:
http://en.wikipedia....Color_blindness
I will take back ALL my above statements, and will give you no problem the address of a couple of good specialists for a treatment of your pathology. :)

In a nutshell:
  • IMNSHO the current backgrounds on http://dnx.me/ are TOO D@MN BRIGHT, i.e. NOT what was suggested.
