Sorry, I don't know where to exactly post this but I also plan on using it on my boot setups.

What is the best free MBR software?

Used for backing up, restoring MBR on other sectors?

If possible I'd like to include commands for it on a batch file. So I prefer DOS based.

If possible I'd like to include commands for it on a batch file. So I prefer DOS based.

DOS based doesn't mean command line.

However there are tens of them.

Currently used:
MBRFIX:

MBRWIZ:

If you want "real" DOS, use debug :

dsfo \\.\Physicaldriven 0 512 C:\mymbr.mbr

will do nicely under NT based systems.

dsfo is part of the DSFOK toolkit:

An example batch using it is here:

Check this (MBR_backup):

To restore, you could try automation using dsfi/dsfo utility, or request wimb for new function.

I use Bootice for all my MBR related operations.
It has a very nice GUI and is easy to use.
It is primarily intended for USB drives ,but it works fine with hard disks.
