yes it is official update by BEAN. he is mainly recoded it to work with BURG (new brother of grub family ) , and he also updated it to be work with windows 7 and windows vista .

for testing on win 7 or Vista

kindly download the archive FBINST.1.6.vD.zip from the attachment .

extract it to C:\


from command prompt go to that folder

fbinst --list ( use the proper hd number from this command)

fbinst (hd#) format --fat32 --force ENTER
fbinst (hd#) add grldr grldr ENTER
fbinst (hd#) add-menu fb.cfg fb.txt ENTER

it is very important to use --force function in win 7 or win vista for proper testing . and also it is very importent to use the grldr version included.

please inform the results \.

EDIT: Bean has repeated several times in the answers that both fbinst and the new grldr can be downloaded from the top message, but no matter how many times I checked, I didn't see any attachment for download. Maybe only the registered member can see the attachment for download.

Hi all,

This topic seems to be a bit dated , but I still would like to share my results.
Thanks to Maanu and others here I have finally been able to boot some Asrock systems from around 2005 (K7VM3, K7VM2 etc) using fbinst.

After reading Wonko's posts, it became clear that those old bioses are trying to boot my USB keys as "floppy" or "zip".
I had merely formated them to fat32 and made them bootable with grub4dos. They worked fine, but only with recent systems. Not with older cheepo computers.
Using fbinst together with the GUI fbinstTool I formated them again, this time as --zip and with the chs option.
The older systems are now booting fine as zip. Good work!

I had to add plopboot.bin as some sort of USB 2.0 driver, legacy USB support has to be enabled in the BIOS so booting is painfully slow, 1.1 speeds at most.
Now with the plopboot.bin I can either load the same USB stick in USB 2.0 mode (faster) or do some sort of "chainloading" with my external USB 1TB harddisk.
Previously I had to load the plopboot from CDrom, a bit of a hassle because those older systems sometimes won't read CD's anymore.

At the moment I'm happily booting from any and all keys I had lying around. This saves me a lot of time and no hassle anymore with bootcd's.
I understand that fbinst is not being developed anymore, but hopefully plop bootmanager is.

Maanu, I'm using the "fbinsttool" at the moment, but I saw in another thread that you prepare your USB drives from the command prompt.
Would you please share the command you are using?

I'm asking because the fbinsttool has the "align" option but it needs a parameter "n". I would like to use the align option but on the commandline you only specify "--align" wthout the "n" parameter.
