I've been reading on a few topics like this one here:

http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=12087
http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=10376
http://www.911cd.net...?showtopic=9345

This one from joshua is a good tip to follow:
http://www.911cd.net...&...ost&p=55443

Or here:
http://www.911cd.net...&...ost&p=59236

But the most advanced reading I've found withouth XPE comes from zuluDC
http://www.911cd.net...o...ic=725&st=0

Wich also shows how to further tweak the explorer shell to get much better results, this dates from 2003 and at this time all changes to already made hives had to be done and exported manually.. :P

But I'm still not sure on how to make this possible, just wanted to post a topic to know if anyone had more experience dealing with this and could perhaps give some help.

This snippet uses XPE to add entries:

;add to Start Menu\Programs

0x2,"Sherpya\XPEinit\Programs","Test Program","%SystemDrive%\Programs\TestProgram.exe"

;add as icon

0x2,"Sherpya\XPEinit\Desktop","IconName","drive:\path\to\program.ext"

Isn't there any other way of doing this? :P

Any thoughts?

:P

Yes, it's a good possibility - zuluDC also exposes quite a few interesting resources to explore and several ways of customizing builds with explorer, this is where things get interesting.. :P

Do you mean with the explorer script or not?

Yes, using the explorer script as shell.

All icons could possibly be hardcoded into the registry hive, instead of being added on each boot by sherpya's logon manager (at least I think it's how it works on XPE), it will read all data from sherpya's reg sections and then will create the changes in profiles folder for the start menu and/or add the keys needed for icons on the desktop.

Perhaps there is a more efficient way of doing this, isn't it possible to hardcode icons on the desktop like the recycle bin, my computer and others?

Otherwise I'll probably try to add them inside the profiles folder, in any case I think an already hardcoded solution would probably give the best results.

I'm pretty certain this could be integrated into the hive. If you want some software that might provide a methodology to do so, use RegMon as you install Hummingbird Host Explorer, I know Hummingbird Network Neighborhood installs itself as a system icon. You could also see what registry settings change as you switch between classic start menu and the start menu in Windows XP.

More info (these are pretty nice to have anyway):

XPE builds the .lnk files on boot putting them on the ramdrive in the userprofile.
Paraglider made a utility called genshortcuts to create the .lnk files from the XPE entries for use with a post-processing script.

Not sure if this helps with what you're trying to do or not. :P
