I boot VistaPE from a USB CD ROM. I am using it to deploy images onto a target device via Imagex.
Depending on the state of the target device. the C drive and D drive media may or may not be formatted and/or partitioned. So I have built a diskpart script that repartitions and reformats every time and re-assigns drive letters C and D
But - If the C and D or not formatted or partitioned, VistaPE detects my USB CD ROM and a USB key (sort of built in to the CD) as the first available drive letters - Mainly C and/or D.
Is there a way to tell the OS to make the first available drive letters for assignment M: or something?
By the way - Vista PE is great = I can boot VistaPE from a USB CD ROM ( being emulated actually on a USB stick ) in under 5 minutes and deploy my software images)

You can try this app:
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html
cannot say if it works under VistaPE though.
