I have had a functional Windows 7 on USB environment for several months now. I use it about twice a week. This morning when I went to turn it on...I get the 7B message and a BSOD. This thing has been flawless up until now, and all of a sudden it will not boot anymore. I tried my backup windows 7 HDD after this one failed and it works just fine. Just this one drive that will not boot. I tried the drive on both of my laptops and I get the same result. Since I cannot boot into the drive...what are my options for correcting this problem?? I have seen some .reg files floating around on this forum, but that will not help me if I cannot get in to execute it. Please help me if you happen to know what might be the issue. Thanks !!!

FWIW...

Dell Precision M4400
and
Dell D620

Both do not work

Well after much headaches and profanity... the solution was found.

The problem occured after I windows update dit its thing.

Using a program called Winmerge, I was able to compare my registry to a working HDD with windows 7 on it.

Then once the differences were found I used a program called registry loader PE to make the needed registry changes.

These are the differences that were found.

under hkeylocalmachine\(whatever registry loader PE calls it)mine was _G_system\controlset001\services

usbccgp
usbehci
usbhub
usbohci
usbstor
usbuhci

All of these entries need to change the Start data to "0"

Windows by default sets these to "3"

Also change the Group Data to "Boot Bus Extender"

For some reason mine was changed to "Base"

After I made these changes, then everything booted just fine.

comments ....suggestions?????

Heared about that problem before here, though in a different context.
Wonko, i think, recommended a tool which watches over these entries and changes them back if needed.

Sure.

And it's not that much hidden, it is used for the tutorials for Windows 7 on USB (stickies) in this same Forum), first one:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=9196

You may want to read, besides them, the historical thread:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=9051

And the actual original thread for the tool on 911cd:
http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=22473

It is not completely clear WHAT actually triggers it  (besides changing the PC), but the "brute-force" method of having the USBBOOTWATCHER service running all the time fixes it satisfactorily. :P
