Im in the process of copying 30gb of files from an XP based laptop to a USB HDD using VistaPE 11 (XP installation damaged by virus, unusable). I dont see the safely remove USB icon anywhere. How can I safely remove the USB HDD from VistaPE?

Hello
You are not going to remove that USB HD till you are done copying right?
It will not hurt to just unplug the USB HD when copping is done.
Sometimes plugging in a USB device after PE is booted to the USB device may not be detected and installed right
Then I would check to make sure files have been copied
Reboot Laptop and reload
After you are done I would look at updating Your PE disk
It MAY have been faster to image Laptop HD
I like to have a complete image of a HD
Good luck

If in the properties of the USB drive, optimize for removal is selected, safely remove is not required.
(This is the default setting for XP, i guess for Vista too.)

I can't check it right now, but if you right-click on the drive in Explorer you might get "Safely remove" or "Eject" on the context menu ...

Thanks for the suggestions, but I couldnt find anywhere in drive properties or explorer for anything related to USB device removal. I guess in a 180mb VistaPE vs a 12gb Vista regular install much would have been taken out incl the safely remove USB function. After copying was done I unplugged the drive and checked a few files (docs, pics, clips, etc ) and all seemed OK. Most of problems I encountered in the past due to unsafely removing USB device involved .exe files and these were mostly on flash drives. Maybe a USB HDD is safer than a flash drive? I hope so.

You can always try adding an "external" program. Thanks for the suggestions, but I couldnt find anywhere in drive properties or explorer for anything related to USB device removal.
