Hi all,

I'm wondering if it's possible to load ghost images from an external handy drive connected via USB.
I start norton ghost from a pendrive, and it detects my network card, mouse... but i'm unable to detect an external USB drive (tried many different).
I've tested with all these drivers http://www.hiren.inf...loads/dos-files

If anybody could help me, I'd appreciate so much.

all i can do is to give u the proper floppy image i made for myself and my friends . it is bit difficult for me to explain .. it is kind of super floppy with some other tools too. and btw dont mention any warez here ,

First, Welcome to the board.

I start norton ghost from a pendrive

I would discourage booting from pendrive to use ghost,
as this will change the dos drive letters.
Better (if possible) boot from a cd or floppy and then
use a pendrive or usb drive to load the image to/from.

All of what drivers? this page shows a multitude.
You should need 2 to load your usb and the correct
config setup. Look here
Lots of info on dos usb drivers and links.
The files you likely need are at the first link.

Keep in mind that simply copying the files to your boot drive
Will not work, you must add the correct enties in config.sys

Really you do not report any detail neither about which version you are using nor about how you start Ghost from your pendrive (I assume using a floppy image), however even your Ghost should provide USB 2.0 support through "aspiehci.sys" driver.
So, download a copy of "aspiehci.sys" from here Direct download
then create a "usb" folder (not strictly needed, but elegant) in your working root (that's just where is your "config.sys") and place your downloaded copy just in "usb" folder.
At last edit your existing "config.sys" adding the following entry

DEVICE=usb\aspiehci.sys /int /all

Now your Ghost should recognize (and install) external USB devices.

I also tried your solutions, but it didn't work. What happens with aspiehci.sys driver is tnat, from ghost, when I try to change the drive with the handy drive pluged in, it hangs.
With all the other drivers, it doesn't show up.

Any other ideas¿

What happens is this:
I have a transcend USB pendrive with autostart enabled (via software called mFormat).
I boot my PC and start ghost with --noide option (for sata HD).
I select Disk/From image, and when I try to select the drive letter from the drop down menu, it hangs.
All this happens only with aspiehci.sys driver, all the other drivers didn't change ghost's behaviour.

My actual config.sys is that:

About some releases of Ghost behaviour with USB drivers a lot of issues are reported, however I think your case could be a memory allocation issue or a bug in Ghost 2003 (as far as I remember I had in the past a couple of floppy with 2003 release that hanged during USB drive selection forcing to reset the machine and to try again: then it worked).
Note that the "-noide" switch seems not needed in many configurations: I have a machine with 4 SATA HDs and another one with 2 SATA HDs and I never use that switch (so, try without it too).
Furthermore I do not know anything about your autorun "software called mFormat".
During Ghost loading can you see the USB driver information "Installed Successfully" about both your pendrive and your USB HD?
I use Ghost 10 from my (Multiboot) UFD and it works fine, but I use (several) floppy images (more or less "complete") loaded in memory by grub4dos: I think that actually it is the best way.
Tell me if you are interested in that "alternative" way.

Not sure this is relevant in your case, but I've found that sometimes all Ghost needs to work on the systems that it hangs on, is a Retail data CD in the optical drives. It seems that on some systems it will continuously keep trying to poll/read from the optical drive if they are empty. Putting a cd in the drive gives it something to finish reading then spit you back to the other drive selections.

Ei! With a CD it doesn't hang, but still can't see the handy drive...

did u try with usbaspi.sys ? or use it like that

Hello,

Many thanks for all your help and answers.
I've downloaded a trial version of ghost 10, and... it works fine!!!!!
It recognizes handy, cd, dvd, corporate network folders, pendrive... everything!

So I'm going to recomend to my company to buy a license of Ghost 10.
