As you might know, MS decided with Office 2007 to use a new "default" format, based on XML.

A few morons inexperienced computer users have already started sending me letters in DOCX format.

Besides replying them (politely) explaining them where they could stuff those  and please re-send me the letter in a Human Readable Format, following this guidelines:
http://www.gnu.org/p...ttachments.html

I have found that the MS VIEWER for this kind of thingies is some 27 Mbytes.

For a quick peek inside the contents of the letter, actually the only thing I am interested in, I found this :

Which is a 142MB download plus another 15mb for the Java runtime.

Mind you I thought you guys in Europe all had broadband access which is twice as fast and half the price of what we pay here in the US. I remember downloading beta copies of windows xp over a 56K dialup modem. That used to take about 24 hours.

Very true, but it is free and comes as default under Ubuntu. One can ask them for a free CD shipped over to the house by regular mail.. :good:

eheh... I can only imagine your phone bills.. ^_^

How much do you pay to get broadband for personal use?

Around Portugal I spend about 30 euros a month to use 4Gb worth of data from wireless 3G at 3Mbps, newer models fly at 7.2Mbps but I'm already happy with the current speed.

Wired broadband is 15 euros without limitations but I don't like to stay indoors. A company is now offering 100Mbps optic fiber to home users at ~80 euros per month. Prices will certainly vary in other european countries.

I pay $50 per month for 8mb internet only. My brother in the UK pays 30UKP for 20mb which includes phone service. We do get free local calls so a 24hr download cost nothing other than the $30 a month for phone service.

Latest version of OCX converter did not work for me on a MS .docx document, see here:
http://www.boot-land...?...c=7476&st=8

However I found a working, online, free and no-questions-asked converter:
