All the latest Chenall's builds of Grub4dos are designated as either 0.4.5c or 0.4.6a. What's the difference between the two?

http://code.google.c.../downloads/list

I have picked up the latest build "grub4dos-0.4.6a-2014-01-17.7z" and it seems to be working ok. Is it considered a stable release or a beta?

Grub4Dos project seems a bit confusing for new users. Chenall is listed as an "active member" on the original GNA website which is always picked up first by search engines (see the link below), but for some reason he keeps uploading the latest releases to another website.

0.4.6a has some changes internally, but the main difference is that 0.4.6a has USB 2.0 drivers (rd/wr). This means that, with the correct commands, you can access a USb 2.0 USB drive at USB 2.0 speeds even if the computer only supports booting at USB 1.0 speeds.

Unless you need this USB 2.0 driver support (for which there is little or no documentation on how to use or why you need this apart from the mention of a few commands in the readme doc!), I would suggest you stick with 0.4.5c (2014-01-17) or later. I am still finding bugs in 0.4.6a.

steve6375 - Where did you get grub4dos 0.4.5c 2014-02-28? I know that it is in your file Install_RMPrepUSB_Full_v2.1.718.zip

on http://grub4dos.chen...oads/#year_2014 and https://code.google..../downloads/list is only 0.4.5c 2014-01-17

:dubbio:

sorry! I meant 2015-06-05

Yes 0.4.6a can work without map --mem provided the file is not too fragmented.

I have not tested this personally but probably this version still incorrectly maps the ISO image (WinXP) and appears BSOD 0A. Read this: http://reboot.pro/to...-22#entry193610

or WinXP not support direct map ISO, only map --mem

I can confirm this, I booted an Iso that was in 2 fragments without any problem, but latter another Iso in 80 fragments didn't boot, anyway after defragmenting it, it booted fine.

Well now we need to find out how many fragments is the limit.  I think is going to be only a matter of experimenting.

I'll take 32 as the limit until new info is found. Thanks steve6375

The latest version of 0.4.6a supports .jpg files for splashimage

There is also some new commands

echo -rrggbb
echo -v

Also new setmenu command which look interesting..

2015-07-07 (yaya)
1. Support for 16-bit per pixel color mode (64K 5: 6: 5).
2. Support jpg (jpeg, jpe) image format.
3. In vbe mode, using echo -rrggbb can display 216 kinds of color samples.
4. You can use echo -v display version, memory information.
5. Increase setmenu function, enhanced graphics editing menu. Parameters:
--ver-on --ver-off version information on / off. By default;
--lang = en --lang = zh menu Help English switch. Default English;
--auto-num Open Menu automatic numbering;
--line-spacing = [s] --font-spacing = [s] Set character spacing / line spacing. Unit: pixels. Default 0. The following parameters should be located before;
--title=[x]=[y]=[title] menu title location and content (title header). Unit: columns, rows;
Note: Columns = image horizontal pixel / (character width + character spacing) character width = 8;
The number of lines of vertical pixels = image / (character height + line spacing) character height = 10;
--help = [x] = [y] Help menu position. Unit: columns, rows;
--box x = [x] y = [y] w = [w] h = [h] l = [l] menu item title start column, start line, the maximum number of characters per line, the maximum number of items menu, menu box line width (in pixels);
Note: w = 0 represents the horizontal center. After this time w x should be;
l = 0 indicates no menu box;
--u restore the original state of the menu.

if you use setmenu --box x=8 y=2 w=0 h=20 l=4 --help=8=23
then the box will start at x=8 and, if the width of the screen is 100 characters (800x600), then the menu will be 100 - 8*2 + 1 = 85 characters in width.
--lang is for the grub4dos help text that is below the menu, e.g. Press ENTER or 'b' to boot

It has at least one bug that I have found so far, so just regard it as experimental at the moment!
