Having toyed yesterday with a brand new PC, got me thinking about getting myself some new gear.
Since Vista and Win7 are out of the question, i would like to use XP, but which version?
Should i better stick to a 32Bit XP or better get myself a 64Bit one?
What are the advantages / disadvantages in real life?

Typical tradeoff:
RAM available vs. Drivers/Apps availability, IMHO.

My experience:

I installed on a 64bit 2core 2.5GB intel PC with 2GB memory several OS-s, just to test my WB development.

As a result: 64 bit Vista and Win7 seem to run remarkably faster, with xp x64 I do not have any experience (I do not have that CD yet).

But 'extended' from Vista and Win7, IMHO XP x64 could be the better choice. (You have to remember that XP 64 is really Win2003 x64!)

DisAdvantages:
Gamers can not have directx10 (well i do not play new games and wizard of war still works  , there are some rumors around saying dx10 can work on xp but I guess no official distribution)
no 16 bit support (you can not use .com files)
Some x64 hardware drivers are hard to find and some are nearly impossible (especially old usb cameras, scanners)

Advantages:
Very fast, and since it is server2k3 based very stable (well I do not get crashes I got used to with xp32, maybe this is only a feeling :>)
Reminding: no limitation of x64 driver usage (certification) like M$ decide to do with vista/win7 etc.
one thing i like very much: I have a lots of softwares installed (with lots of registry addings) and my registry searches are remarkably faster than equavalant xp32 :>

Total: I Love xp/2k3 x64 :)

Never say no  You cannot use sandboxie because such a limitation

Howevever, on August 14, 2007, Microsoft has issued Windows Update KB932596 to Windows XP 64-bit which brings the Windows XP PatchGuard up to par with the Windows Vista PatchGuard

I would say it was MS best shot. The fastest and stablest Windows ever.

Sadly they discontinued development in real operation systems :)

For a new computer, i think i will need all hardware new regardless, since there seem to be only USB connectors available anyway.
16Bit programs were never seen on my machine, so this is no problem eighter.
Can i get problems with 32Bit programs on XP64? Average Programs, not games.

sandboxie do not have x64 driver (I guess SbieDrv.sys)

Average Programs works great :) , but if you have a program that uses an 32bit driver (ex: go2pdf, sandboxie :) ) than you can not use. Also All games you have previously should be working. StarCraft The Best Game forever (forme) working since win95 and still fun :>, And even 16bit games works nicely with the wonderful DosBox, :) Annnnd eeeeeven Commodore64 bit games working with VICE  (say hello to Wizard of War)

Sadly they discontinued development in real operation systems

Totally Agree

MedEvil, I guess it is time to install xp64 there and share your first touch experience.

In general XP 64 / win2003 64 use different drivers from vista 64 / win7 64. You have better chance of compatibility with older hardware if you are using vista 64 / win7 64. Even then not all hardware supported by xp 32 is supported by 64 bit versions of windows.

Some hardware manufacturers are better than others at producing good 64 bit drivers for older hardware.

I'm actually more concerned about drivers for new hardware.

You shouldn't be:

Some hardware manufacturers are better than others at producing good 64 bit drivers for older hardware and for newer hardware too.

Well earlier version did have, but since limitation are introduced by an update x64 version no longer makes sense.

@MedEvil
I wouldn't say there isn't much of a problem with drivers for newer hardware, more with very old ones.

Usually 32Bit programs working nice, WoW64 is world apart from WoW32.

Thanks, i did not know that (Long while ago I did not use sandboxie seeing it does not support x64 anymore without reading the reasons)
Now with Reading the info here
http://www.sandboxie...?WindowsVista64
I guess there is an "acceptable easy way" (compared with other windows x64) to use sandboxie Version 3.01 (64-bit) on xpx64

As a result I learned one more thing, thanks a lot

what i meant with "acceptable easy way"

To use Sandboxie 3.01 on Windows XP 64-bit, you must first remove Windows Update KB932596.

Time to sleep now, tomorrow will be a verry 64-bit day for me  , Good night
