Hello,

I made some changes to vpeldr.exe

I hope that this will help with the current driver troubles. Anyone who thinks he/she knows what vpeldr.exe is and who is able to replace the original version with the one attached here (replace attached vpeldr.exe in basic configuration and tools script) is welcome testing it.

What i did:

- many small fixes and changes
- it generates a (basic) logfile in system32\vpeldr.log
- completely removed all things related to hardwaredetection and driver installation
- no longer uses uictl.exe to set screen resolution
- no longer uses devmgr.exe
- no longer depending on devcon.exe
- no longer has files like uictl.exe compiled in the vpeldr.exe
update:
- vpeldr.exe no longer scans periodically for new config files (this caused trouble when running from usb HD and i think noone ever used it...)
- fixed startmenu

The reasons for removing the hardware detection:
- for many users loading extra drivers is not needed
- the system starts faster
- unloading already working drivers should no longer happend
- a completely new tool will be developed to just handle driver issues, but i want it out of vpeldr.exe

Please report here how it works for you, especially if you loose any functionallity due to not loaded drivers...thanks!

Ater reading all the News today I would test this first

I think this is where to start with any updating of Vista

Could someone replace this in Winbuilder and send, or point me to a place i can Download it ?

Extract the vpeldr.exe somewhere (from ctmag's link)

Open wb and go to Basic Config script

Delete and replace existing vpeldr.exe with new from ctmag

delete and replace must be done with the WB functions...see the screenshots...the buttons are marked with colored circles...

I have added this to my build. And it works well. The only thing I don't link is the start menu is collapsed into one tree. Can you set it so that the looks like a standard start menu with most items starting under Programs.

same here, everything seems to be working nicely except for the start menu being screwed up.

Ok just some first looks

BSexplorer - Shell

Start menu is different
Running Hardware Detect X from task bar was no help

Failed to start network support from taskbar
VPE loader & tools no longer runs Detect Hardware (slow mode)

Device Manager does not detect my network card
USB hard drives are all detected and listed
More is listed under - Other devices
Less is listed under - System devices

Explorer - Shell
Start Menu – Most listed do not expand or open
Example – start – System to get to Device Manager

So I cant refresh device manager except in BSexplorer

Peloader tools closes under Explore Shell
I cant reopen it to get back to BSexplorer shell

More later

Well first, the new loader takes about a minute vs 8 for the old one B)

Unfortunately, there's a price paid, mainly in hw detection; lost my network

Oh, that Start Menu is really annoying as well, any fix?

well, i have no idea why the startmenu was affected, but i will look into that...very strange...

regardinge the driver loading...as i mentioned, i removed all driver loading stuff and i want to add it again in a seperate program that will be called from vpeldr

to all who lost network support: did you add extra drivers to your pe to get network support? If so, how did you add them? They should work when adding them with peimg when you use this script http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=6437

please tell me if this helps.

current information from nightman (he mailed me today) makes me think that it might be better to stop here (you can still use the version above) and wait for his new developments...i don't want to do my work twice:-=)

But please still report any issues and if it works well for you, and remember that drivers you added to you build will only be used if the were integrated by peimg. normal driver files will not (yet) be used...

- start menu issue
- I used with runOnceex plugin and the screen settings getting changed twice
- good idea to separate hw detection (so we could start) Ghosting pc qithout waiting the full hardware detection.
- I wold like to get a verbose output from each operation done by the loader.. something similar to linux

[getting disk size geometry...........OK]
[getting list of mopunted partition ..OK]
[setting screen resolution............OK]

Well after not being able to insert Peloader files in Vista (RC1) as pictured in post 3
I noticed version of VistaPE picture in post 3 is VistaPE core v12 (beta3) ??????

And just want to point out that I can NOT do that with version VistaPE (RC1) WB [075 beta 5K]

It gives me a zipped system32.7z file in picture 2 and when I click on it
It opens another window. I cant not remove or add files in Winbuilder

Well after trying different ways to do this I crashed 3 tests build WB folders

I would think that to test anything we should all be on same version!!!
 B)

you are right...

unpack the system32.7z to the script folfer (right click the file and select unpack to script folder)

the use 7zip to unpack the files from system.7z and then replace the vpeldr.exe... repack to a new system.7z and then go pack to WB. delete the system.7z from the script and then add the new one you just created...

I got problem running it with the script xVPE CBox.
it seems to endless restart of the schell :-( the logonBox with the selection of shell and the password appers and after it start vpeldr, and after it prompts again the first screen.
I have to investigate.. maybe is a problem with the screen resolution or maybe is a conflict.
I hope the two scripts can be developed toghether, by splitting the hw detection and the screen resolution, and the loading of the schell with a custom login prompt that can be used also to lock the workstation. Something similar to Transparent screenLock. But in the future.. I know that the developers are making a very good work with VPELDR

CT says - unpack the system32.7z to the script folfer (right click the file and select unpack to script folder)

I did this for my test 1 folder,
And ran tests and posted here

Then I got a brilliant idea I would try this in my full build of beta scripts I have been working on.

EDITED - deleted tests i had everything wrong

It was my fault

When I get back to where before
I will test more

Just fyi, the change you correctly pointed out is in the Basic configuration and tools script (07-config) and independent of WinBuilder.exe version. I had some issues with latest RC1 so kept using previous build, I didn't realize this change was made in that script (version number unchanged). Sorry for confusion but simply a matter of extracting the archive first before making the change.

@ctmag,

I'm still having trouble getting my hardware (specifically NIC) detected using the new vpeldr  - all attempts at loading drivers with DaveXP-peimg-driver or CopyDrivers fail (both worked with old vpeldr), the drivers are there in "\\system32\DriverStore\FileRepository" but not recognized, if I attempt re-install of drivers get 'file not found' even when pointed to correct location in pe system. Interestingly, if I point to same drivers on my hdd, install without issue B)
