Sometimes GOOD companies start with exceptionally good products, and then fail miserably over the years in delivering anything up to the level of the other companies.
In the good ol' DOS days, there was NOTHING (except maybe XTREE and PCTOOLS) even comparable to Norton products:
Norton Commander was the best file manager EVER. (and till today the OFM's go strong):
http://www.softpanor...OFM/index.shtmlNDD for DOS was the best disk tool.
Norton Utilities were the best utilities you could have.
When the Windows era came, and I mean "real" windows, 3.x version
, there was nothing, and I mean nothing as useful as Norton Desktop.
When Win95 came, Norton made a (GOOD) Norton Commander for W9x, which suddenly was taken off the market.
Norton utilities 2, the version for Win9x/NT 4.00 while still good, started to be partially unuseful/awkward to use.
Anything after it started being bloated.....
...the only exception being GHOST (of course pretty much DOSish), that still is going rather strong.
Norton Antivirus started as well as a quite good DOS program, but since say 2002 (i.e. when the number of PC's started to explode) it became a mass of bloat:
http://www.computerg...m/symantec.htmlThe "shift" happened probably because Peter Norton, who was really, really one of the greatest PC experts in the world, left the executives and marketing departments manage the development and the company overgrew.
I will never believe that Peter Norton himself could have ever approved the way Symantec apps now behave.
