I think I got the same problem: when pressing the start-button of winbuilder (72a or 74... its the same) I got the error-message "wimfltr.sys - driver not installed"....
I am using Windows XP SP2 als OS.
When confirming to install the driver I always got a Bluescreen.....
When canceling the build process does not work....
I got this problem since having made my system-partition new (a fresh windows so to say).... but all the VistaPE-Folder was and is on my D-Partition.....
Is it possible that, although I am using an Original Vista DVD as source, I got to install the WAIK????
Perharps anyone got a solution...

Okay,
now I installed the WAIK........ and got automatically a Bluescreen when starting the building-process....
This only happens when running it on my XP-machine.... when using it on a Vista-PC, everthing works....
Could anyone help??

I am also have errors mounting wim files, but in a booted XP Project. Perhaps I'll post for help in another forum.
Some things I have discovered for imagex on XP SP2 - as well as wimfltr, you need up-to-date fltmgr, which is available in Hotfix folder on the WAIK DVD, or download from MS - WindowsXP-KB914882-x86-ENU.exe (other languages?)
If your bluescreen is the 'Bluescreen of Death', the problem may be severe. Commonly, a driver problem, but could be any driver at all.
A few versions ago, VistaPE gave an option to use WimUtil which was an alternative when WAIK (and hence imagex) was not installed. Hmm..?
I am able to mount a boot.wim from a DVD to HDD, so I don't think that having the source on another partition is a problem. ... unless the file system has something to do with it?
You could try:
imagex /export <VistaDVDSource>\sources\boot.wim "*" <new folder>\sources\boot.wim... to copy the boot.wim to another partition, and same with install.wim.
... and try the exercise of mounting and unmounting (don't forget to unmount) winpe.wim in the WAIK folders using command-line imagex. The error messages are often, but not always, fairly explanatory.

...and, as a general advice, Blue Screens are NOT entirely blue , very often (read always) they have some white pixels on them.
If you look hardly enough those white pixels form the shape of actual alpha-numeric characters, what in technical jargon we "geeks" call ERROR CODES.
Posting the EXACT ERROR CODE may help in finding the problem.

I still got this problem. Has anyone an idea? Becaus I want to return to Windows XP as my host-OS..... but the winbuilder only works with Windows-Vista at this moment... because of this bluescreen-error....
It is really crazy, because in the past, Winbuilder worked with XP........ but I have no idea... I can not find the problem...
The bluescreen is about a STOP 0x00000024 - Error and about the NTFS.SYS..............

WinBuilder still works with XP or Vista - the only difference in version 074 is that it won't run on Windows 2000.
VistaPE version is still under beta testings so you would be of great help providing feedback regarding how this works for you on XP.
Are you running as Administrator with UAC disabled under Vista?

In the past 6-10 month I used Winbuilder 072a with Windows XP on my Notebook (DELL).... everything worked fine....
Then, in September of 2007, I installed Windows Vista on my Notebook... before that I made a Acronis True Image of my System-partition...... after that I worked with Vista and Winbuilder 072a.... everything worked fine..... then I updated to Winbuilder 074..... everything worked fine.....
But now I restored my Windows-XP-True-Image..... and Winbuilder (72a and 074) crashed..... and I always got this bluescreen..... I tried installing / not-installing Windows-WAIK..... when having installed WAIK I got a bluescreen with "STOP 0x00000024-Error with NTFS.SYS"........
If having not installed the WAIK, I got, in the "0-PreConfig-Script" the error message "error driver wimfltr.sys.... Driver not installed. Install now?"
If selecting YES, I got the error message "WIMUTIL.EXE c:\windows\system32\wimgapi.dll is not a valid Windows-File"

I still got the problem. I dowloaded and installed Winbuilder 074 now on a different PC with Windows XP:
The same problem!!! When running the "pre-config"-script the pc crashes (reboots or bluescreen) when running the "imagex.exe".......
I cannot run VistaPE on any Windows-XP-PC........
Please help me.... I am going crazy......

After that without installing the Hotfix it worked.....

Can you spend us the time of propably reinstall, and do a 'positive test':Okay...
I got it now......... I had to re-install all the components..... (WAIK, RUNTIME, VB)........ but
WITHOUT this Windows-XP-Hotfix from the WAIK-CD !!!
After that without installing the Hotfix it worked.....
I dont know why, but it did......

You have to run VistaPE in the same OS/Architecture as the one you are trying to create.
For instance to create a Windows Vista PE ISO you have to run WinBuilder in a Windows Vista PC, 32/64 bit architecture depending of the one you have.
If you try to build a vistape on a windows xp host it will crash.
That's what I have concluded after several tries with a pc running xp trying to build a vistape iso.
Anyone who has different conclusion let us know.

I've built VistaPe iso's using Windows 7 and they not only built with no problems, but they worked perfectly as well
