@Jacklaz: I remember in the past that Sherpya had created a replacement for bootvid but i havn't tested it...
It may be what we need.

and further explained by jaclaz where to get it.

Yep, it is in one of the links I posted above:
http://www.911cd.net...&showtopic=8343

but I didn't try it.

It works by replacing BOOTVID.DLL, which not being the original one, can be "Resource Hacked" to insert custom image.

Download is here:

jaclaz also explained how to create a BMP that would work as a boot Screen.

@TheHive

That image is not made by me, you know how bad I am with graphics! :P

However procedure is simple, using The Gimp:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
1) Open a new file 640x480
2) Draw whatever you like
3) Image ->Mode -> Indexed -> Maximum number of colours:16 - OK
4) Save as -> Select File type by extension -> Select Windows BMP image .bmp
5) The Gimp will (probably) ask confirmation to Export, click on Export
6) The Gimp will ask you for RLE encoded, check the box and click on OK

The attached image is (badly :P ) drawn as above, please test it in bootvid.dll

Jaclaz posted where to get Resource Hacker and how to put the BMP into the BOOTVID.DLL.

@smiley
It should not be difficult, you need resource hacker:
http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Open the bootvid.dll file, choose bitmap 100/1033 then choose Action -> Replace bitmap

Or can you be more specific what the problem is?

Hi,

I'm having a problem with putting my own image into bootvid.dll with Resource Hacker. I'm getting this ntoskrnl error some people also mentioned and I'm sure it's not the image fault bo ResHack's fault. I tried opening the Angelina Jolie boot screen supplied by Jacklaz, in ResHack, I didn't modify anything just saved it to the new file. The old file is 190kb and the new one without any modification is 191kb which I don't understand. Also when I put the new file into the system32 directory it will crash give me the error on boot.
Just to make everything clear the Angelina Jolie bootvid.dll supplied by Jacklaz works flawlessly.

Regards.

I think the problem your having is coming from your new image not Resource Hacker.

Following the following steps should produce a good image that can be imported and replaced using Resource Hacker.

However procedure is simple, using The Gimp:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/
1) Open a new file 640x480
2) Draw whatever you like
3) Image ->Mode -> Indexed -> Maximum number of colours:16 - OK
4) Save as -> Select File type by extension -> Select Windows BMP image .bmp
5) The Gimp will (probably) ask confirmation to Export, click on Export
6) The Gimp will ask you for RLE encoded, check the box and click on OK

test it in bootvid.dll

Right, I read everythin I could find before posting about my problem.
The thing is that I mentioned earlier that I haven't even used my own bitmap image. I just opened Jacklaz's bootvid.dll in Resource Hacker and saved it without making any changes. The previous file was 190kb while after saving it without modifications it's 191kb and doesn't work. That means it has nothing with the image format as I haven't even changed it.

Well, maybe, just as you added a "k" to my nick, Resource Hacker added something to your bootvid.dll.
:P

What do you mean by "I opened in Reshacker" and saved without modifications?

It is possible that if you opened the bitmap from Resource Hacker you used (via OLE or whatever) some program that did not save it as RLE or added some header info or what not.

Can you open the 190 Kb and 191Kb file in a hex editor and see where the difference is?
