Hello all,

Use Thinstall to make any application big / small into a single exe with portablity.

1.A Thinstalled application will be a single .exe file(All the required .dll,.ocx,.tlb,.dat,.ini,etc are packed inside a single .exe file)
2.It uses a virtual file and registry system so that it will not write to the machine's registry or filesystem on which it runs.
3.The thinstalled application still finds everthing in its place as it expects even though the folder / registry entry may not be available on the machine it is running on.

Of course, you are right. Thinstall packages everything the program requires. I trialled thinstall at work a while back and it is very good.

Only proplem is it costs thousands of dollars -- US dollars.

It's out of my league therefore so is not really a viable option.

2) it has nothing connected with Winbuilder
3) I hope it is not some kind of advertisement for a Commercial software

1.Sorry i thought many of us may not be knowing about it.Since i came to know about it very recently
So i thought i should let all know it.

2.Since if we boot using a winbuilder cd then many of the softwares just don't work just because they do not see all the settings & files.So if we thinstall it to a single package then we could run it under winbuilder.I have been able to successfully run many applications which failed to before thinstalling.

3.I am not associated in any way with Thinstall nor i try to promote it.So there is no intention of commercial ad'.

And i please request the moderators to remove this if they feel it is an ad' or it is of no use to anyone.

The fact that you can't get certain software to work in Wb has nothing to do with WB, but that you've seen to still lack some of the skills needed for the more complicated programs.
The only advantage of thinstall is that it captures everything automaticly, while with a script you have to do it yourself. That's also why the quality of scripts varies widely, depending on the skills, the developer had at the time of creation.

As I see it, it is just like I would post something like:

I just tried the OPERA download and I do have some perplexities on the contents of the License Agreement you have to accept that seems like a 30 days trial

Many applications Thinstalled here (Firefox, Opera, Gimp, OpenOffice...) don't need virtualization to be portable, a good launcher can do the work.

You can found some of them in english at PortableApps.com or in french at PortableApps.free.fr

Is there some clever way of looking inside a thinstall created exe?
I would be really curious what they put into the winamp package, to make it 22MB big!

Landesk Application Virtualization is based on Thinstall and it is cheaper.

On testing

Dowloaded the program installed Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution and also downloaded the personal key they offer.

So I ran Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution and created a new WinAmp layer and told it to only take snapshots of the changes made by installed program. Then I browse to where I had the program I wanted to install and then finished and it started the installer for winamp. I then just installed winamp as i would normally and finished the install. WinAmp now appears inside the Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution admin thing. As you can see its in the desktop and appears to be part of the OS.




If I right click on the Winamp and select deactivate


The application is gone from desktop and programs files folder. You can reactivate it using the Admin thing.

SVS is good, but install SVS service.

Instead Landesk need any service to work, but you must have installed landesk with regular license.

The best is Thinstall that can create real "standalone" application, but is expensive.
