FreeNAS

FreeNAS is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage) server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, AFP, RSYNC, iSCSI protocols, S.M.A.R.T., local user authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. FreeNAS takes less than 32MB once installed on Compact Flash, hard drive or USB key.

This comes as a sugestion from sanbarrow.com:

Sounds a really great option for those who have two or three old computers getting dust and want to test out a network cluster for storing files..

Here's more info from wikipedia:

FYI, there is some "competition" between FreeNAS (OpenSource):
http://www.freenas.org/
and NASlite (Commercial), :
http://www.serverelements.com/
there is now a Freeware .ISO V 1.xx version - not the old floppy one, that caused some problems in building, but the .iso version, however the floppy will die after a limited number of hours of service, not "by design" but because recent floppies suck:
http://homepage.ntlw...aulk/index.html
(the site has some other tools, some kickers and generally good info)

There is also Openfiler (Open Source):
http://www.openfiler.com/
http://sourceforge.n...ects/openfiler/

here is a site that compares speed and features, including Openfiler:
http://dan.bcapro.com/freenas/review/
http://dan.bcapro.co...speed/index.htm
more:
http://freenas.bcapro.com/kb/

Make sure to visit both Server elements forums:
http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/

and Freenas ones:
http://sourceforge.n...forum_id=507590

to get an idea about features and problems

The experience of a guy who made himself a terabyte NAS with Naslite (in German, but on the page there is a direct link to google translation, which is more or less understandable):

I tried viewing that site and it tries to put something on the PC, I think.

hmmm, it looks more like you have a messed up system, that's one of those errors that have to do with the cervellotic interdependencies of a MS Office install, see here for a similar KB:
http://support.micro...kb/265194/en-us

Most probably on the page there is some link or whatever that "triggers" MS Office.

In my machine with Opera (what else) and NO MS Office (I have OpenOffice installed) there is no problem.

If you just Google for
"please wait while windows configures"
(with quotes), you'll see that is a very common problem with all Microsoft Office Suites and with a lot of other programs.

Is it possible that the final ".ms" of the address creates this? :confused1:

However, try accessing the page directly:

I'll keep in mind what you posted when and if I get the pop up again.
