I just got my first android device, a very basic tablet with no phone or gps. it does have wifi but I havnt turned it on, I dont trust google and I want to learn more about what this OS (Android 4.0.3 ICS) is actually doing before I let it connect to anything and it will also give me a chance to get familiar with this OS so that if I ever do get a phone with it then I will at least have some experience with it.

we need a sub forum for this here, no? why not..

Ive been looking at other forums for these but it would be really great to discuss this stuff with reboot community that I am familiar with and trust because Ive seen what has been developed here over the years.

Ive already looked at alternative ways for booting this tablet elsewhere and still havnt found out how to boot from USB or SD yet. cant boot a superlite XP it seems either except with an emulator and it really slow. I would love to run XP on this thing directly somehow though! I dont trust M$ either but thanks to mostly boot-land/reboot I know my XP and can control what it does or does not. one day I am sure we will find a way to get XP on a portable/mobile device like this though.

so where is the next best forum to join that I can learn about ARM and Android stuff? xda-devs?

thanks

Hello!

XDA-devs is definitively the reference site to find other people hacking into Android. Like you, I see no harm in having an Android sub-forum.

I've created this place at http://reboot.pro/forum/144-android/

Since you're the one proposing the forum, I've made upgraded your account to have moderation power there.

In regards to Android, I'm also a user. :)

I don't think you'll be able of running XP because the CPU architecture is too different. However, it should be possible to get root access on your machine and then install the normal Linux stuff and programs. I wonder if the new Windows 8 for tablets would work on your machine.

Perhaps time time start a new topic on the brand new forum section? :)

hi Nuno!

that was unexpected.. (Me, A MOD? lol) and a new sub-forum. wow, thanks for the sub forum but the mod deal I may not be the best at because I do not have consistent online access but I will do what I can with it and try not to short any circuits here. I can spot a spammer pretty good now too since they have been so busy here lately ;-)

I do have a lot of questions about this OS (and the related hardware) so I should be able to get the sub forum started with them but I also have very limited times that I can participate and moderate so I hope you do not have high expectations for me. I'll do the best I can though.

going to have a look over there now.. we'll hafta start slowly if its all up to me though (hope not).

thanks,

~Zoso

With spammers we did passed through a bad moment indeed. We're still just allowing twitter registrations to keep them far.

As for mod skills and the new forum, don't be so surprised. You've been a rebooter for more than 4 years now and participate often in the community. So, don't worry my friend and just do what you can at a pace you feel comfortable with.

Let's see if we can learn some new interesting with Android now.

@Zoso
Android is just another Linux. Don't get confused by the missing "ix" ending of the name.

You can run on your tablet any OS that was compiled for the ARM plattform, but non that were not.

Have fun with your new tablet.

OK Nuno, that sounds fair enough. Ive sent PM to you for any details if needed.

hi MedEvil, but Android must be the most popular "linux" of all time now and if it is not then I have no doubt it will be soon enough. being Linux based is what Im looking forward to with it though. my only Linux experience is on the WRT54G router, a Garmin GPS, some Solar Charge Controllers but with it (Linux) those hardwares have become 10x more useful than originally intended so Im kinda looking forward to what Linux/Android based hardware has to offer. my old WRT54G is something Im really proud of though, I just wished I had more time to delve into Open-WRT and DD-WRT for the newer routers.

I think the Android sub forum will be quite popular here someday too and looking forward to what other reboot members have to offer there. hoping it will actually start something really great in that area just as most all the other areas on reboot have. that is exciting! reboot is second to none in combined membership creativity.

I very much doubt it. But you are forgiven for being exuberant, when discovering something new. ;)

Android already goes on a billion+ users: https://plus.google....sts/NeBW7AjT1QM

How big are the other Linux distros (desktop or pocket) by comparison?

Well: "Never trust a statistic, you didn't forge yourself!" ;)

How big are the other Linux distros (desktop or pocket) by comparison?

No clue. But popular, implies imho that the user / admin made a decision for something or at least, against something. And did not simply choose, not to choose and went with the default.

Let's install iOS on all tablets and Phones and see, if more than one billion people will install Android on their device. ;)
