File Name: WinBuilder
File Submitter: pscEx
File Submitted: 04 Sep 2013
File Updated: 01 Apr 2016
File Category: Winbuilder legacy

This is the easiest Windows PE builder on earth (not kidding)

Quick start:
  • Download WinBuilder from this page
  • Extract the zipped file to a folder, choose a short path like c:\winbuilder
  • Run Winbuilder.exe
  • Type "AUTO" on the main window to create a Win7PE boot disk
The instructions on the screen tell where you find the Win7PE ISO image.

Would you like to see new features added? Click on the "Support topic" button on the right side of this web page.

---------------------

Description

In this page you find the easiest and most advanced Windows PE builder ever created. It is easy and advanced, but it also has an "ugly" look (we will explain why).

---------------------

Supported Operating Systems

The new WinBuilder has been written to be independent from whichever operating system you are using, it is meant to work from Windows, Linux and MacOSX.

For Windows users, we make available "WinBuilder.exe". You just need to double-click for launch and then type "AUTO" to build a boot disk.

For Linux / MacOSX users, you should:
  • Open a console window
  • Change to the directory where you have "WinBuilder.exe"
  • Set once the execute bit to winbuilder.jar and launchEx.jar
  • Type: java -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -jar winbuilder.jar
  • Type "AUTO" to launch the boot disk build
We haven't tested all possible platforms. If something doesn't work then please get back in contact with us to provide details about the machine where it is not working, so that we can fix it.

Our software is based in the Java platform. We do this in a very secure manner, for Windows users we include our own version of Java that does not require Java to be installed on your machine.

---------------------

Commands available

A short list of commands that are available inside WinBuilder

ART - Creates a banner in ASCII art
AUTO - Fully-automated boot disk creation
BUILD - Creates a new boot disk PE ISO using the actual project
CONFIG - Changes the settings of the specified plugin
CREDITS - Lists the credits and licenses of resources used in this software
CLS - Clears the screen
DOWNLOAD - Allows downloading pre-defined files from the Internet
EXIT - Concludes the execution of this program
FILELOG - Defines log to file
INSTALL - Download and install apps from http://reboot.pro/files
LIST - Lists the available commands
SAY - Provides a valuable life lesson from the rebooter community
SET - Change the system settings using the key/value format
SOURCE - Chooses a Windows source from where the boot disk is built
TTS - Defines text to speech level of log output
UPGRADE - Upgrades rebuilder to the most recent version
UNINSTALL - Uninstalls a resouce from http://reboot.pro/files
VERSION - Informs about the current version of this program
WEB - Allow users to control this program from a web browser

To know better how each command works, type the command name followed by an "?"

Here is an example for a command that is useful:
install ?
Go ahead and try them all as you wish.

---------------------

Installing new stuff / plugins?

All plugins that you see available here on the reboot download center are available for direct download and install from within winbuilder. To see what is available, just type:
install list
To install something, you can for example try:
install irfanwiew

---------------------

Why is the new WinBuilder so ugly?

On this version we did not added a pretty GUI with buttons and nice graphs. This was intentional and recognize that that the "new look" is not pretty. Maybe can explain a bit better why we did it this way.
  • Easier for those who have no sight. We noted that the previous winbuilder was quite difficult for visually impaired users
  • Consistency. We support Windows, MacOSX, Linux and a web interface. If we only had a GUI like before we'd be spending our time trying to make a user interface that would look good on all these platforms
  • Expansion. With our new plugin system it is easy to write new commands by yourself or by other developers. Using only a traditional GUI would be difficult (and messy) to make this kind of thing possible
Reality is that you are using WinBuilder to get a boot disk done, not because it looks pretty. We deliver a solid builder, you just need to type one single command and things get done without drama.

Other builders out there that look prettier will:
  • require one hour (at minimum) to build a boot disk
  • ask full administrative permissions over your machine
  • only run on windows
  • force you to use a compatible source
  • fail four or five times until you get something

We don't have any of these troubles. You unpack, run and get a working boot disk. Simple.

To be honorable: If your OS does not contain a Win7 sorce CD yet, there is also some time used on the first start, to download the
2.? GB CD ISO (about 20 minutes with DSL 1600) and to extract the ISO. But that is only on the very first use.

  • Have fun! :)

Very east to build  (once I understood what I had to do!)

To start with, I wasn't sure if this was a new version of WinBuilder, a WinBuilder project or both...?

I already have a Win7 ISO. It took me a while to realise that the instructions 'Start WinBuilder' did not mean start the old WinBuilder GUI app; but you meant  to double-click on the WinBuilder.jar file to run this new version of WinBuilder! I had to mount the Win7 Install ISO as a volume before I could point WinBuilder at it. The new WinBuilder is quite a change from the normal WinBuilder GUI that I have used before :loleverybody:

Also, the screenshot in the Download page did not give me any clues as I cannot read any of the text in it! :dubbio:

Anyway, managed to build a WinPE ISO (pretty simple really, but it would have been a lot easier if you printed the instructions when the winbuilder.jar file ran instead of just displaying some unconnected 'famous' quotation ;-)

e.g.

EITHER

Type "AUTO" to download a Win7 ISO and build a Win7PE ISO automatically

OR

Type "install win7pe" and hit "Enter / Return". Wait for download and install.

Type "source" and hit "Enter / Return". Navigate to your source Win7 DVD and "Open" it.

Type "build" and hit "Enter / Return".

OR

Type "config  win7pe"  to change options and settings - then click the "Save" button  (not Submit as in your doc on the website)

OR

To list plugins, Type "install"

To install a plugin, Type "install xxxxxx" where xxxxx can be the unique beginning characters of any valid plugin name

What source DVD is required? 64-bit or 32-bit or will both work? I tried Win7 SP1 32-bit and it seemed to build the ISO OK.

On booting in a VM from the ISO using grub4dos, I get 'The number of drives with the multiPEBoot signature is 0' - should I have a volume label on my boot drive or some tag file?

The purpose of easyDriveLetter is unclear? It does not explain what volume it is trying to find? Is it the source boot drive letter it is trying to find?

Then I get the win7 desktop with Computer, IE, Notepad, RegEdit and Task Mangler icons - nice

I need to play some more but it looks really easy (though a nice GUI for the build/source/plugins/Config options would be nice but it is no doubt in the pipeline?).

cheers

Steve

Yes, in the pipeline. The new winbuilder is perfectly independent from the UI.

In fact, there is a web UI that you might have some fun in trying. Just type:

web start; web open

You can add multiple commands on the CLI using the ";" like Linux.

If you're unsure about some command, just type "list" or for the case of "web", type "web ?" to see an explanation and list of possible switches.

There is also a novelty, now it is possible to add new commands using normal plugins. This means that you can actually write your own UI and then plug it directly with winbuilder. There is no more line-by-line interpretation of scripts, they are read just once and then compiled to bytecode. Meaning that the code from scripts will run just as fast as any other compiled code after being interpreted for the first time, a bit like PHP does.

The language on the scripts is Beanshell that uses a java-like syntax. This means that code applicable to Java around the Internet will directly apply with very small changes on your scripts. With this kind of scripts you get full access to everything that is supported by Java and be able to expand it with external libraries as necessary.

Thanks, Steve, for your comments.

The unreadable screenshoot size is caused in this support topic by the forum's software. In the download page it has normal size.

I have to change something in the download page - like you quoted.

One fact is important:

The WinBuilder application and the Win7PE (as one possible) project are two different things - like in the good old WinBuilder82 days.

Your questions are logically due to the WinzPE project.

Win7PE processes only Win7 x86 SP1 sources by design.

easyDriveLetter is used to "automagically" having in the PE the same drive letters as in the live system.

Additionally it renames the ISO drive to (historic) Y:. This is tunable with the WinBuilder config command.

Currently I have no idea about the "multiPeBoot" issue. That should not occur when starting in a VM. Sorry, I only use VirtualBox, maybe in a different VM the behaviour is different.

There is already the ability to config some user options. (This again is WinBuilder, not Win7PE)

Do "config win7PE" and a html page will appear where you can define some options. Here e.g. also the easyDriveLetter's Y: can be defined.

config.gif

The single components / plugins also can be config-ed according the designed options.

The GUI is a html page, because WinBuilder is designed to work also as client of a WEB server.

Please visit the Win7PE download page to get more details to know.

Another "Please" Further questions about the project should be in Win7PE discussion topic.

Hi

Certainly a shock to use after using original winbuilder as is so different, but always like to try the latest version of things, so great work, nice to see continuing development

I have one question though, I already have a great setup with my PE and lots of scripts I use, how do I get these scripts working with new version, is there any way to import them or instructions on how to modify old scripts to work with new winbuilder?

WinBuilder in command line . . . . . . uh NO!

Most of us are not command line junkies, and most of us have REMOVED Java because of all the hacks & malware.

And you want me to install Java, then run an admin cmd prompt, and then load a Java app on my system?  NOT GONING TO HAPPEN!

No Thanks! Ill look for a better project that won't compermise my system

I will wait for Nuno Brito to update his WinBuilder

I guess you will have to wait quite a bit, as this is Nuno's (NEW) Winbuilder, the decision to "go Java" is essentially his own.

Maybe you contact paraglider to help you with some base information.

Besides his order of reasonable programming languages I'm sure that he will agree that a fully Unicode able Java (or Esperanto, or whatelse) written app is somewhat more usable than an ANSI able Delphi app.

BTW: When you own and use a new mobile model with Google Android, though it away as fast as you can. Android is written in Java :dubbio:

Thanks for the feedback, sorry to hear that you are disappointed. Let's try to get it better in the future.

Maybe it helps clarifying that there is no need for:

- an admin cmd prompt, the software runs without admin rights

- installing java, it is included with the package

I agree with the security risks of installing Java. I also don't like how Java applets get automatically registered with the browser when running the installer from Oracle. This is awful and the same deal like Flash plugins that are exploited by hackers when you visit their web page. To avoid this kind of risk, we include our own basic Java binaries that are only used by winbuilder.

This was the first edition of a new generation, now it is time to start improving. :)

Hi,

I participated in your BootLand community several years ago now, it was a good time .
After BartPe, WinBuilder really brought a nice improvement with its GUI and I really like the true WinBuilder.

I received the news through my old nickname, I thought it was a good news, an evolution , not a step back of several years.
Here is my negative review at the height of my disappointment and my way to disapprove

- +10 for the name issue. Car manufacturers retain the name of a car when it is an evolution, not a revolution.
- Java, what a good choice!
- The user interface is poor, not user friendly, from another time, not even a checkbox ,radio group, weblink or image for the example.
In addition, the choices are not saved: web start; web open > config win7pe > modifications > Save changes > config win7pe (again)
- There is no documentation or so poor.
- No tool to port the existing scripts but given the syntax it will be difficult.
- The syntax looks complicated at first sight: project.bsh, plugins.bsh !
A copy file for example:

FileCopy,"%InstallSRC%\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ieproxy.dll","%TargetDir%\Program Files\Internet Explorer"
==>
File src = new File(core.temp.get("targetDir") + sep + "Program Files" + sep + "Internet Explorer" + sep + "ieproxy.dll");
File trg = new File(core.temp.get("winsysDir") + sep + "ieproxy.dll");
utils.files.copyFile(src, trg)

- the registry is written once for all (30011-BaseHive) and not for each component.
- It is not possible to use 7zip with the created boot.wim !
- The win7pe built is very basic and really limited, not hard to find better

A positive point, It is fast to build :)

Let's try to get it better in the future.

- +10 for the name issue. Car manufacturers retain the name of a car when it is an evolution, not a revolution.

I'll have to disagree with this comment.. There is really no fixed rule to retain a car name as a deciding factor between either evolution or revolution. Just look on what VW does with the new Golf e-motion series that is even more confusing and also criticised by (some) reviewers: http://green.autoblo...t-drive-review/

Furthermore, every now and then you can see car manufacturers performing a revolution on the worst unimaginable proportions.

article-0-0F70749200000578-59_634x301.jp

http://www.dailymail...-programme.html

Using the car analogy, you're expecting all the extras that fit the old model to work on this one. You have a point, unfortunately our resources are based on voluntary effort and extras from previous years not always can be accomodated on new models.

- Java, what a good choice!

It is a good choice.

This is very intentional.

Yes, sorry.

Yes.

- The syntax looks complicated at first sight: project.bsh, plugins.bsh !
A copy file for example:

- the registry is written once for all (30011-BaseHive) and not for each component.

Yes you are right. The language is very similar to Java. Easier curve of learning for those with Java experience. The way how the registry is handled isn't a good example for developers either. Hopefully there should soon surface some plugin examples to help on this part.

- It is not possible to use 7zip with the created boot.wim !

I have the impression you might need to update your 7zip to a more recent version. The WIM structure changes too often and if both winbuilder and Microsoft use the same boot.wim, I'd suspect 7zip is out of date. This is actually the reason why the AUTO command was introduced, reduces surprises in different archive formats.

- The win7pe built is very basic and really limited, not hard to find better

It was the first release and our focus is the engine. I'm already happy to see a good and simple project like this available. Yes, there are projects providing more complete boot disks or better looking boot disks. Alternatives are good, the focus here was to first build a boot disk in a reliable manner.

A positive point, It is fast to build :)

It can be much faster. There is already an experimental way of speeding up file transfer, might take a few months thought.

You made me smile  Billy-Bob, but I believe that the subject is allready closed for Nuno, unfortunately.

Thank you for the answer Nuno, I remain puzzled ;)

This is very intentional.

I recall that I came from BartPE to Billy-Joe for that, few years ago,
So sorry to read that, what disappointment.

- No tool to port the existing scripts but given the syntax it will be difficult.
Yes.

Sorry, again, to hear this answer. You re-start from scratch, good luck but it is not very reassuring..
Do you really think that you will be followed? I doubt .

- It is not possible to use 7zip with the created boot.wim !
I have the impression you might need to update your 7zip to a more recent version. Look by yourself, the file size is always 0 by using 7z 9.20 or 7z 9.30
It is not the case with original Win7 boot.wim - install.Wim

It is not for me, I thinkI keep Billy-Bob.
