Force custom resolution

Hi,

I've got this issue at work. I need to force custom resolution to run some tests. Best, using command prompt. All computers are connected via Avocent Online KVM SWITCH and it supports res up to 1600x1200 px. I need to force resolution 2500x1600. Windows won't allow, to do it. It is not important what is happening during the test, I can be blind then. After test resolution should be switched back to previous (max 16x12).


Would you suggest something?

When Windows negotiate with display resolution? Is it up to graphic driver or screen driver? Maybe you have some hacked display drivers which allow to setup any resolution existing resolution?

You can't force it to a higher resolution than the adapter supports, only the max or lower res.

Consider that 2500x1200 needs quite a lot of memory and some adapters may not have enough. Also some monitors may not support that res.

What do you mean by adapter? Display adapter or graphic adapter?

Your problem isn't the display or the grahics card, it's the KVM switch. max.res. was probably limited because of signal quality issues.
No way to work around that, but buying a KVM switch, which can handle the intended resolution.

Also, even if you can 'convince' the graphics card to send the high resolution data, the switch will simply turn off, like any monitor these days, when confronted with a too high resolution.

MedEvil, I know this. Right now I removed 12 pin from VGA cable to disable EDID signals and I get all possible resolutions. This modes with higher resolution than switch allows is only while running some test. Screen for user is not neccessary because test are started from another control machine via agent. By the way screen can be accessed then via VNC. One way or another in my opinion 12 pin remove is rather workaround than solution for my problem. I wouldn't like modding whole lab with this I am looking for software to force this res like hacked display driver or some "edid proxy" .
