I couldn' find any subforum/board better suitable to start this thread, I apologize......................BUT

How is this possible?

First see the attached picture.

Then save this image to any of your folders and select view thumbnails or medium icons…

Can anyone crack the mystery behind it?

EDIT: DO NOT download the thumbnail, but the full image by clicking on it & then right click -> Save Picture As from the browser

No, but no mistery at all.
Have you EVER read the very basics of .jpg and EXIF format?
The file holds information about the picture and abut a thumbnail of it.
You just edit the thumbnail leaving the picture untouched.

Simply open the picture in (say) the Gimp and save it with another name, the thumbnail will be re-generated.

Now i've test it again in a Windows 7.

Nice happening :-) In Windows 7 it acts as expected (as you said). But another behavior unexpected... if you fix "big icons" for the default folder view, go one level up, and re-enter the folder againg, you can see the thumbnail bigger (and not alone) :-) and after deselect and reselect, you get the girl alone again :-)

Can anybody please confirm what Juanjo has reported?

I can assure you that at any size, the image on my system (Vista x64 + Thumbnail handler extensions for DDS, TGA, DXT, PCX, TIFF, LBM, ILBM, PGM, PBM, MP4, MKV, OGM etc. etc.) are always the same. Exactly as it shows in Preview, or PantShop Pro. (excluding re-sampling)

Windows Explorer creates thumbnails and icons based upon COM+ Explorer extensions, and they should not take any notice of EXIF information. Where EXIF information should be displayed is on the Details property page. This is handled by a different COM+ Explorer extension, but you often install them with Productivity suites like MS Office or Libra Office to get Author, Editor and such details.

I have property page extensions for MKV, OGM and MP4 (over and above those which come with the OS) to provide details of bandwidth, horizontal and vertical resolution and (where possible) frame rate etc.

Acrobat often installs a Thunbnail / Icon handler for PDF files... but I don't use Acrobat, and the fact that I don't want to wait for a folder full of PDFs to generate thumbnails plays a big part in that decision. (If's a nice feature, but when it is available, it really should be optional) I don't cache thumbnails either, because I didn't like the "Thumbs.db" files XP/2k3 created and I still don't like it's equivalent in >= Vista.

Since MS Paint will correctly alter the thumbnail, you can correct a thumbnail by opening the file in Paint and saving it again, from Paint. This worked for me whereas the other suggestions did not.

This happens only with some photographed JPG files that are stored with the EXIF data (specifically Exif.Thumbnail).

When saving the picture in Paint, it corrects EXIF data.

The idea is probably that of saving some time and INSTEAD of generating a thumbnail, use the EXIF one (if present).

For the record the EXIF non-standard is probably the only thing more stupid than the JPEG standard, and "queer" or plainly wrong interaction in MS OS's is not news:

Oh! I see.

If u just right click the image and select refresh thumbnail it changes the thumbnail and this problem only occurs with pics generated on an embedded system such as a camera or phone (not android but older). The thumbs.db file gets its info from the thumbnail data stored inside the pic

I tested it on XP, but the same should also work on win7. Will try to test it on win7 today.
