Thanks for the News.

VirtualBox 1.3.2 Win x86 Review
Small download about 12MB.
Easy to follow Prompts during install.
Even though the drivers are not digitally signed they work in WindowsXP.
Looks good and seems to have more options then Microsoft Virtual PC.
It is a very mature Program from my testing. It has alot of options to tweak. :P

You can see from the screeshots I took how mature it is.
Took about 36 Screenshots from beginning of install to booting LiveXP ISO. I had to change the RAM to 256MB. Lol! I forgot to do that and I didnt notice I needed more RAM untill I payed Attention and LiveXP Said I needed more RAM. lol!

mmm! another thing I would like to mention is that it has a USB Controller. Some might like to test that. It might have some good usefull applications to testing USB booting. Interesting.

Another thing is that you can run VirtualBox under a virtual Environment it seems.

The .msi installer crashes under my Win2K. :P

I guess I'll need to unpack manually the .msi and see if it works at all under Win2K.

The Hive, can you post a dir of the files?

Nice finding!! Also liked the screenshots, they help to get a good idea on how it works.

If it's open source this probably means that they won't mind a repacking as a standard .zip file or installer.. :P

I compared with qEmu, both started from commandline:

The first 'setup' screen appeared after some seconds in both cases.
Then VBox needed about 30 seconds to finish boot, whiole qEmu needed about 80 seconds

I'm thinking to write a script to start VBox from WinBuilder.

So the reason is probably not the downloaded .msi but the installer. You should try to reinstall it.

But is does not run under W2K. It does not find the entry point _aulldvrm in ntdll.dll.

Hmmm, I think that this should be attentively evaluated, from

Did you note that they acknowledge difficulties with W2000 and provide
a 'workaround' package, found at the bottom of the 'FAQ' page.
FAQ is linked to by yellow box at right side of 'Home' page.
Hope this might help... :P

I finally managed to have it installed, thanks again psc for your test. :P

Just for the record, for future memory and as an example on how NOT to design an application, expecially if it is as "vital" as the "Official" Microsoft Installer, here is what I did/had to do.

The installer aborted saying "An error was found", NOTHING else anywhere, not in the log, not in Event log, not running msiexec /i <file> /options, NOTHING (well yes, there was something in Event log like "Virtualbox Installer failed", very useful :P )

So I tried to reinstall the msiexec/MSISERVER package:

InstMsiW.exe

It refused to install, as Service was already present, nor it allowed to repair the install :P.

So I uninstalled the MSISERVER Service, quite obviously Microsoft Knowledge Base was almost, but not quite, completely unlike helpful :P .

I had to search on the web and "risk" some Registry editing. :P

Finallly, after a couple of tests/reboots, I was able to reinstall the above MSI installer, situation EXACTLY as before :P .

So I found version 3 of the installer (the above is 2), which the clever Microsoft guys deftly named so that it is easy to understand which version it is :P .

WindowsInstaller-KB884016-v2-x86.exe


Install, reboot, situation EXACTLY as before.

Install, reboot, finally an error message comes out, 1305

Error reading from file <FILE PATH AND NAME> verify the file exists and that you can access it.

Of course I can read, write, and more or less do ANYTHING I want on that folder, being Administrator, by the way I had just installed the installer itself from that same directory. :P

After a few more tries, I tried last possible resource :P , copy the stupid

VirtualBox-2007-01-16-14-08-05-win-rel.msi

in a folder on a FAT volume, and

TA-DAA! :P

Install completed succesfully, and I am now up and running. :P

Hmmn.. I like the idea of something faster than qEMU buuut..

The pre-compiled installer is evaluation and personal use only. Not so good for people who want to bring it to work. Any links for a pre-compiled OSE version? I noticed some places *think* they have got the OSE version and then you see the closed source license in the installer :P

Its just released. So we might need to wait a while before we see an Open source Windows pre-compiled OSE Virtualbox version or versions.

Yes but the faster version of qEMU (qEmu accelerator with qEmu) is not open source either and some people distribute the binary for that along with regular qEmu. Just use the open source version of VirtualBox (unless it boots as slowly).

Not so good for people who want to bring it to work.

I'm no lawyer, but their definition of personal use appears to include use at a business, as long as you install and only use it yourself.

The "workaround" package installed for me on w2k ntfs with no issues.
