Microsoft is effectively giving away Windows 7 free for a year with the launch of the Release Candidate.

The Release Candidate is now available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and will go on unlimited, general release on 5 May.

The software will not expire until 1 June 2010, giving testers more than a year's free access to Windows 7.

"It's available to as many people who see fit to use it, although we wouldn't recommend it to just your average user," John Curran, director of the Windows Client Group told PC Pro. "We'd very strongly encourage anyone on the beta to move to the Release Candidate."

After 3 years, Windows 8 will come to succeed Windows 7. :D
They are trying to deroot XP now.

The other day I was joking with my friends that I wouldn't want Vista even if they gave it away for free.. :D

Let's see if this freebie convinces more people to use windows 7 from the start as Vista pretty much left an awful impression.

That's why I don't use Vista.
Just learning and testing.
One thing I don't really want is that it is coming with plenty bugs in final version.
We can use 1 year for FOC. (Free of charge)
If some Anti virus software are following this, how nice it would be :D

Allow me to tell some experience:

As known, I'm currently working on the 'WinBuilder on 64 bit host' issue.

And I have a test PC with Vista Ultimate 64 bit installed (thanks to fxscrpt, he gave me a legal original CD for free).

I built Win7PE and tried to catch it's hives. After build they are located as a (in my opinion neutral, no system) file in the Temp directory.

When (all WIMs are closed, etc.) I tried -LOGGED IN AS ADMINISTRATOR- to mount them in regedit, I got the message, that the access is denied.

Question: ???? I do not know what to ask.

An OS, that does not allow an Administrator to do a simple operation (which he did regularly with previous OSes) is not an recommendable OS, but only the next step of Billy the Door to conquer the world.

Please have a look here.

And if you think that some interesting themes, automatic multimedia presentations, etc. are more worth than your personal freedom, install Vista or Windows 7, and be happy about every new service pack which makes you more dependent on Billy the Gates!

BTW: @YahooUK:
I am happy to see that you also do prefer to NOT use Vista in your personal environment!
But that should not hinder us to build an excellent Win7PE system.

I used Vista SP1 32 / 64 since it was released. Had no problems - had no blue screens. Was compatible with all software I tried to install. X64 version even continued to work without a reinstall when I swapped out a AMD FX55 processor and replaced the motherboard, memory and processor with a intel Core I7 965

Had 2 blue screens with windows 7 build 7000 and many failures to resume from hibernation and frequent loss of USB devices on resume from S3 sleep. Downloading win7 build 7100 at the moment. Will install the X64 version.

Can you try the situation I explained above, and if successful, tell us, how you mounted the project's hives with regedit?

Hmmm, I cannot get any software that directly accesses the hardware to work in either win7 or vista, This ofcourse is supposed to be a safety feature. More likely it is a control concern (ie: ms wants full control of all the hardware)

Examples of this are daemon tools and nero burning rom.

I think the problem loading the registry hive after the wim is built is that the capture option blocks it - makes it read only?. If I copy the registry hive to a temp directory it then loads ok from the temp directory.

I also have downloaded win7 rc from some share sites, but I always check SHA1 with this on MS site - was ok. But have seen also iso files large as 3gb insted of ~2,5 ;-)

So far the X64 version fixes all the USB problems I had with build 7000. Also fixes the accessing of the floppy drive every time an explorer window opens. Still has the networking problems with VMWare which are fixable by using host only networking and ICS.
