Osiris is a freeware italian software made to build completely shared portals through p2p ( serverless ) and the new version 0.12 add the gateway Isis feature that gives the read-only access, to all content available on the Osiris p2p network with just a common web browser.

The software doesn't need any other pre-installed component to work, and it is distributed as installable software or portable, it's useful for external hardware.

You can download Osiris from the download page ( eDonkey & Torrent links available )

To register to a portal it's needed only to click on invite-link, or copy and paste the link into the browser. It's available a dedicated forum to spread invite links, here you will find and publish link to portals made by the community.

To surf portals where you have been registered, by running Osiris, click on the right arrow-button: you will see the main page showing all your subscriptions.

To made new portals is available a Video Tutorial that shows how to made a new one, manage contempt and publish it on the dedicated forum.

We kindly ask to report any problems on the official forum.

Hmm.. this seems a very neat concept.

Maybe it would become a possible solution for allowing our site to grow without additional costs in terms of available server resources since it would be possible to add more machines as necessary without any complicated configurations.

This is very interesting indeed, thanks for the link.

I'm glad it could be useful
I'm only a betatester of the program from version 0.1 but if you want more information you can ask me or you can go in international section of official forum.

Yes, I've already been reading the available documentation.

Most of the available informations are still available in Italian but portuguese people can read most of the texts without much difficulty.

-------

The idea of running the same forum software across several machines is wonderful. This would certainly ease and improve the load balance as our community gets more popular while avoiding offline periods for any given reason.

However, some questions arise.

- How are the forum software upgrades handled across all peered machines?
- Would the forums be reachable by website domain?
- Would the content of the forums be still available to search engines?

Maybe some of these questions get answered once I get my hands on the software but for the moment I'm already keeping up some other tasks that need to be solved but would nevertheless love to hear more details about this.

-------

I can also join the discussion forums but I think that keeping an active talk around here might also help promote Osiris a bit more to other readers, don't forget to add a link to the site on your forum signature.

I see nobody answer your question, probably the developers are very busy with their work or with the development of osiris....so Il'try do it by myself...

2) Would the forums be reachable by website domain?

Osiris is a program to create with his own CMS (probably still raw and not user friendly like joomla for example for user)portals like forum blog, ecc. and share it through p2p...but you cannot use it on a webhosting for example
Since your question has been made many times from many users in the official forum...they created a module for Osiris called ISIS that you can downlaod here.

This module written in php5 can be used to have an ONLY READ PUBLIC ACCESS to a portal built in osiris but if someone want to create a message or modify portal you have to use osiris....

ISIS in this version (0.3) can be used in two different modes:like proxy (already available) or redirect (still not available). To understand differences you can see this figure:

Posted Image

To use it you must have osiris active on your computer to show contents or it's possible to enable cache with an option in isis to show pages saved on webserver...but you cannot for example save automatically all portal on a webserver...(this is a feature still in development)

3)Would the content of the forums be still available to search engines?

With ISIS google should save content of portals with some differences between proxy mode or redirect mode

1)How are the forum software upgrades handled across all peered machines?

If i understand this question correctly you mean:in emule there are server or kad for bootstrap and sharing contents ,in bittorrent there's a tracker and in osiris?

To do that there's another module called Anubis (i know they haven't much fantasy to call all these modeules :) ) still not available for everyone but only for developer that you can see here:

http://anubis.kodewa...hp?page=portals

For example osiris uses Anubis to have bootstrap addresses, list of portals available etc.
But if for example anubis is not reachable from osiris,or you've choosen in osiris to not use anubis, osiris however works well:infact for bootstrap addresses you can manually insert them in osiris.

I hope you understand what i've written........

Thank you for answering, I've been thinking about this over the last few days.

I'm already trying out the demo version, for some reason it feels a bit slower to access and browse the topics.

Also, in which forum software is the forum based?

Guess, we'd be excluded from use it unless it would support Invision Power Board which is proprietary and they probably wouldn't like seeing their software being used in p2p mode.

Let's hope this software might still prove useful for those who wish to start up new forums.

Osiris doesn't use any particular forum software, but developer created by themselves parts to create a forum and share through p2p

In future it will be possible for example to transform a phpbb or invision database ( if you have an invision license for example there's no probem to transform it in a phpbb database and the same with osiris) in an osiris database so what you have written in invision could be used in osiris and share without using a webserver.....or using osiris and isis as website domain.
