Qemu? In need of assistance

Hi folks ,

I am wanting to set up a virtual machine on my XP system (Preferably a portable setup would be desirable) because I want to try out a new Mini windows 2000 I have constructed, before blowing onto a clean partition on an alternative PC.

Can anyone provide instructions on how to set it up, I have acquired the "allinoneqemu" file that is required to setup Portable Qemu but have no instructions how to set it up. My PC is a 3Ghz P4 CPU "Medion" Multi threading unit with 512Mb of ram with XP home installed. Oh! Then some instructs on loading the 2K system into Qemu would be great!

allinoneqemu? Since when does one need a special file to run qEmu without installation?

Nice to "C" ya but that is not really the answer I am Looking for. I thought that allinoneqemu was the "portable" version of Qemu (could be wrong) I would prefer a portable version, if a. I can get it, & b. I can set it up.

What about portable "Virtual box" is that easier to set up than Qemu?

Any constructive guidance would be appreciated!

The one advantage that qEmu always had over other VM, was the fact that it didn't require installation.
For making handling qEmu easier i suggest getting qEmu Manager, if it isn't already included in your all in one package.

In other words, we can "draw a line" between "GOOD" applications, like Qemu, that DO NOT need to be installed and thus are "inherently" portable and "BAD" apps that NEED to be installed.
Half way between the two are a great number of apps which installer actually installs something to the Registry, but that do not inherently NEED these entries (maybe losing some marginal functionalities, like context menu and similar ones).

Qemu is totally portable, just unpack the contents of the archive in any directory and it will work.

The kqemu accelerator instead needs to be installed (and started/stopped), being a Service.

Qemu-Manager and it's installer do manage very well the process.

Really nothing "unusual" needed for it's setup and use.

Personally I prefer version 4 as opposed to version 5, as it has some features that I find missing in v.5, or to be more precise, I find that version 5 has taken some control off the user hands.

The Qemu-manager dowload INCLUDES the Qemu package:

Ok Addendum:

Work in progress host PC 3Ghz multi threading Medion PC with 512Mb of ram with
[C:\ = 29.4Gb] + [D:\ = 61.5Gb] + [E:\ 84.9Gb] + [F:\ DVD Optical Drive] + [G:\ DVD-RW Optical drive] + [H:\ 10.46Gb] partitioned HDD (Add that little lot up yourself!)

Dedicated to all those clueless individuals out there like me!

Here's my setup using Qemu Manager:

1) clicked on big red cross button
2) Asks for new virtual machine name: called mine Win2K (Clicked on [NEXT])
3) selected "windows 2000" from drop down menu (incidentally other options are provided!)
4) Virtual machine ram required in Megabytes : 128 (default)
5) Drive (info) Tick box selected "Create new virtual drive"
6) Save Virtual disk as (default) : Images (folder)
Filename : VIRDRV
Save as type : Virtual disk -------------------then pressed [SAVE]
7) Asks for you to input drive size: 1000 (in megabytes)
8) Drive type: options here include I selected the bold 1:
Qcow2 (Qemu Image Format)
Qcow (Qemu Image Format)
RAW (Raw disk Image format)
Vmdk (VMware 3-4 Image format)

Settings profile (if applicable)
DEFAULT
[ ] (Tick box) Enable Audio (Ticked yes)
[ ] (tick box) Launch full screen (Didn't select this option)

[ ] (Tick box) New Advanced configuration options after saving [Save Virtual Machine] (depressed button)

So now in main window of Qemu manager I have:
[(RED BUTTON)] with "Win2K" displayed in main window?.

So in summary:
I have created a 1000Mb Virtual drive in a folder called images
Used 128mb of of total 512Mb ram to run the OS that is to be installed within it.
Which I can now open & close from Qemu Manager.

(A little bit of Welsh culture inclusive, "Heya Boyo's", "All completed, a lot quicker than you can say":

Okay Lamer question:
What is the difference between the various image formats Qcow2; Qcow; Raw; & Vmdk for the benefit of anyone who drops in?
Secondly!
In my grubby left paw I have a win2K CD installation can I load this into the virtual disk or do I have to create a Qcow2 Image (& how do you do it if so) first & load that? Sorry for being a twit but it is intentional LOL!
Alternative: I have the files (real) on my HDD can they be loaded from there?

Why have I typed all this "clonk" anyway, 1stly to confirm that I have done everything correctly up & 2ndly to be quite honest with you, in all this excitement & flurry! its quite slipped my mind! Oh yes, I remember, Oop's No sorry, its gone again!
