Recovery Console appears to be one of the less "talked about" environment for booting.

I just found this:

Dean Adams has created a "package" with everything needed to create a Recovery Console CD from the dowloadable .exe from Microsoft originally intended to create the (in)famous 6 boot floppies.

How To Make A Windows XP Bootable Recovery Console CD

For a number of years now, many brand name manufacturers have included a "recovery" CD or they store customized install files on a hidden partition instead of supplying a genuine Windows XP install CD. Recovery CDs typically aren't very useful. While they can get a system back up and running again, you could lose all your data in the process. Recovery CDs and hidden partitions are more of a convenience for the tech support department than they are for the user.

Many people might not be aware that a complete install CD is not required to access the Windows XP Recovery Console. Although one can download the install floppy disks that contain the files needed to run the Recovery Console, waiting for six floppy disks to load is tedious. Creating a bootable Recovery Console CD, using the files from these disks, is a fairly straightforward project.

RecoveryCD.bat does the grunt work of actually creating the Recovery Console CD. The only thing you must add is the file to be downloaded from Microsoft.

Hi all,

thanks to jaclaz I found this fantastic site about to build a boot CD from the recovery console from
Windows XP.

It is like a mini OS with a size of 7 MB, based on NT with USB drivers and so on.

But there is an error for me during the build:

The bootfile xpboot.ima is empty, perhaps of license restriction from Microsoft.

This xpboot.ima can be build from the original XP install CD:

Open your XP install CD with for example Isobuster 1.9.

In the folder BootableCD is a file called BootImage.img. Extract it and call it as above xpboot.ima.

Here's some interesting info from M$ about the Recovery Console. I've always wondered why some options were dumbed down. I see some info on these pages to re-enable useful options.

my pen was fomated with hp utility in fat32 and i have a boot menu with pcmenu!
can i have RC installed without the need to format it again?

OK,I managed to start the Recovery Console from a FAT32 formatted USB-stick.

I found also the "pcmenu"tool.

How exactly do you start the "pcmenu" tool during booting the USB-stick?

I did try to start the Recovery Console (cmldr) trough Grub4Dos,bud it didn't work.

Grub4Dos can also start from Config.sys,as here explaned.

My findings are,that the Recovery Console can start by using Grub4Dos,but only when it starts from Boot.ini

When Grub4Dos starts from DOS,and I try to start RC from "menu.lst",
title find and load CMLDR, the Recovery Console of Windows NT/2K/XP

fallback 2

find --set-root /cmldr

chainloader /cmldr

So I'm afraid you have to rebuild your USB-stick,and start the Recovery Console as well as the "PCMENU" from Boot.ini.
