I have an ASUS Zenbook UX305 which I just bought so I can have, a small, thin notebook which has long battery life,to supplement my larger gaming notebook. It came with 8.1 pre-installed. But I did a clean install of 10. The touchpad works during install while using official Windows USB media, but once I reboot to complete the initial setup it no longer works, and on the desktop as well. It puzzles me why such basic functionality is present during install but is missing afterwards, surely something this important should have carried over. I have an external Logitech trackball which works, and the screen is touch-enabled. The touchpad also doesn't work in Fedora or Arch Linux, I'm still looking for a solution there, knowing that a solution for Windows will be of no use.

I checked Windows Update and it offers alot, mostly drivers rather than updates for Windows. I don't recall a touchpad driver update being listed there, and I feel that MS cannot be trusted to correctly install drivers. I do have the drivers from ASUS support site though.

I'm wondering if it's possible to extract just the driver itself from ASUS's package, then slipstream the driver via a standard tool like Dism to the install.wim, so that touchpad functionality is immediately available.

Thanks!

was your original 8.1 install a uefi install by chance???

some hardware will not work properly if it expects windows to be booted a certain way.

i've had numerous customers and friends who have custom installed windows 10 themselves who had certain hardware like wifi cards, dvd drives, and keyboards not work correctly after a clean install though they were working correctly previously.

most of the time all i've had to do is make the windows a uefi install and everything starts working again.  on my currently laptop the dvd drive won't be seen in any windows above XP until after it has hibernated and come back on--that is unless it windows is running as uefi and then it works flawlessly.

something to consider...

I don't know whether the original 8.1 was UEFI, I formatted the SSD within 5 mins of buying and leaving the store. But Secure Boot was On in BIOS and CSM was off, so I'm guessing it was. All drivers were preinstalled by ASUS, so everything worked.

10 is now running in UEFI on GPT but CSM is On (so I can boot some stuff from USBs that wouldn't otherwise boot).

The touchpad and touchscreen are now mysteriously working, I'm not sure what happened. But I'm paranoid that they will stop working again, so I want to add the drivers responsible for these components to the install.wim. All other components work out of the box.

@ stayboogy: I'm not aware of any cases (and none personally) where a device worked only in legacy or only in UEFI mode. It seems to me that if the proper driver is installed then the device should work regardless of mode.

I only know that now the touchpad/touchpad work, but they didn't immediately after install completed. This install has always booted in UEFI, although I did turn on CSM in the BIOS afterwards. Perhaps the drivers were always installed and some unknown event triggered them into working. I can't be sure.

Noone knows how to integrate drivers into a wim with Dism, and is willing to provide instructions? I'm guessing this would be the way to go, unless there is something else I'm not aware of.

To add drivers to an offline image by using DISM
https://support.micr...n-us/kb/2686316

Asus dosn't offer a scpecific driver, there is a feature package SmartGesture.
C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\ASUS Smart Gesture\\win10\AsusTPDrv\x64 contains some drivers.
However some strange setup, a install.bat and folders with a cat file only.
This is a exception example. Best: ask a user with the same hardware.

Compare at running Windows 10: which touchpad drivers are loaded.
View Device manager details: HardwareID and used .inf file.
And run 'Dism.exe /Online /Get-Drivers'

@ cdob: I've heard of ASUS's Smart Gesture software. But it either fails to install because of a bug in the installer, or it installs but runs several processes at once. This is overkill, especially on weaker hardware.

I tried installing the 10 versions of the Synaptics driver, both via the installer, and manually in Device Management. It fails to load and the Synaptics software fails to appear in either the Control Panel's mouse options, or in the Metro-esque Settings app.

There is also supposedly an Elantech driver I can use, but I can't find it. Windows Update offered no mouse/touchscreen related drivers.

Device Management just lists the standard, generic mouse drivers installed by MS during 10 install. I didn't try the Dism method of viewing running/installed drivers.

It's part of ASUS's Smart Gesture software: Asus\win10\AsusTPDrv\x64\Elan_PTP\AsusPTPMouse.inf
Run ASUS's Smart Gesture at a virtual machine and extract the driver files.

Device Management just lists the standard, generic mouse drivers installed by MS during 10 install.

Which Windoes 10 version did you install?

List details: HardwareID, CompatibleID and used .inf file.
Which driver is used: file name and version

If generic drivers are used, then a chipset issuie is possible too.
Can be BIOS/UEFI too.

Try a current Windows 10 release, TH2 February 2016.
Or integrate current cumulative update. https://support.micr....com/kb/3147458
Windows update installs the Cumulative Update at Core and Pro by default.
There may be newer chipset, usb, touchpad drivers installed that way.
