VMware Server is free once you register and seems to be faster than Qemu, but unlike Qemu it does not support USB booting. I have seen a few posts about using PLOP to enable USB booting and after quite a few frustrations, finally managed to get this working. For anyone wishing to do the same, I have written a Tutorial here.
The main 'Gotcha' was that the Kingston USB Mass Storage Device tick box does not appear immediately when you first create the VM and run it. You need to wait 5-10 seconds after you start the VM but before you run the VM console and then tick the tickbox.
