Hi Everyone,
I received almost 600 e-mails so far since my Last Post about this subject, and due to many demands from friends, colleagues, forums everywhere, this tutorial will be for making an updated “Mission Impossible” USB, that mixes some of my previous tutorials together, specially to include Windows XP and Windows 7 setup files and Kaspersky latest 2011 Rescue CD into project “USB - IMPOSSIBLE” and updating the rest of the software already there in the first tutorial.
I suppose it will be suitable and more than enough probably for more than 90% of (starter/medium/advanced) everyday computer users, as well as IT pros and IT security pros, where they can use in their daily routine, practicing all types of computer diagnose/repair/security, etc...
I figured making project “USB- Impossible” with the most important software needed(the way I assume it’s enough) but of course suggestions from readers, friends, and colleagues to add more items to this project are always more than welcome if they feel the need to add more.
This USB Impossible Tutorial will be of 5 parts, where part 1 and 2 are for making a bootable USB that includes (Windows XP and Windows 7 setup files, BackTrack 3 & 4 final, Live Hacking CD 1.1,Ophcrack XP & Vista--mixed in 1, Ultimate Boot CD 5.0.2, latest Hiren’s Boot CD 10.6, Linux Mint 9 Isadora DVD edition, Ubuntu 10.4 netbook edition &rescue remix, YLMF 3.0,dban 2.2.6, latest parted magic 4.11, partition wizard 5.0,Macrium reflect rescue CD 4.2.2525, AVG 9 rescue CD, BitDefender 2010 Rescue CD, Kaspersky 2011 Rescue CD, konboot 1.1) and part 3 is for portable applications like (Portable Apps and LiberKey Ultimate, and part 4 will be of using virtual desktops, simulating Windows OS, using software like Mojopack and Prayaya, while the last part (part 5) will be about Installing and using your very own Windows XP, Vista, and 7 on USB and using it as portable OS from "portable Virtual Box" with its last version 3,2,6.

You can get the tutorial PDF file from HERE

Your tutorial has a small mistake, you have ringed the File -> USB button in RMPrepUSB screenshot but this is irrelevant and should not be clicked.

i didnt c any mistakes or errors in this tutorial..step by step followed it and work perfectly with me..i think jamal means by ringing that button he want us to pay attention and not press on it..cuz the ones that should be pressed are numbered..they have numbers next to them  again fantastic work jamal..and thank u much..

There are quite a few other buttons you should 'pay attention to' and NOT press but they are not ringed (like the CLEAN button). Other buttons that you should press are also ringed (like the prepare button). As I said, it is a small mistake but may confuse people. Tutorial looks very good thouigh I haven't tried it all yet

Jamal,

Wanted to let you know, I was DL'ing some of the items as I am able, and I am DL'ing "Parted Magic" and the tutorial has vers. 4.11, just wanted to give you a heads up that the site has updated it to vers 5.1 and the new DL is 111mb as apposed to the 93.5mb for the 4.11...

My guess is that this shouldn't really be an issue should it? Mainly for the 16gb thumbs as you did with this tutorial as anything larger should def not be an issue unless compatibility comes into play.

Hi Jamal
Wanted to thank you for this super tutorial with pictures. Takes a lot of work to do that.

I did try the tutorial on the USB and here are some of my observations and hoping to get some help--
Parted Magic :
The download link takes you to the download webpage where the updated version is "pmagic-5.1.iso.zip", which i downloaded and tried it on the usb by following the tutorial. But it gave an error saying couldnt find "pmagic-4.11.sqfs. When i checked inside the iso file (pmagic-5.1.iso), there is a file called pmagic-5.1.sqfs. So i went back to the download webpage and downloaded the pmagic-4.11.iso.zip and using UltraISO checked for pmagic-4.11.sqfs which i found, and when i tried on the usb it works.
So to sum up pmagic-4.11.iso works, but pmagic-5.1.iso doesnt work as it cant find the pmagic-4.11.sqfs. Some command has to be updated (dont know which one, could it be the one inside the menu.lst file?), so that it works with pmagic-5.1.iso
The webpage download link for pmagic-4.11.iso is at the bottom of the webpage, PMagic 4.11.iso

BitDefender :
New Version Bitdefender ISOLINUX & DOCS folder
Old Version Bitdefender KNOPPIX & DOCS folder
When i clicked on the download link, i reached for the bitdefender.iso file of (14th July 2010, which lets say for simplicity sake is a new version, depending on the date.) So this version doesn't have Knoppix folder, but has a ISOLINUX folders. So was not sure what to do. Meaning whether by coping the Isolinux & docs folder, whether it would work. So finally i downloaded the older version of bitdefender.iso (older by the date ie 1st July 2010). This one had Knoppix and Docs folder. This is just a point which i noticed.
But finally after everything when i copied this old version to the usb, i got Error Code 60, so i followed the tutorial and using Wincontig defragmented the iso file, but still i get the same error even after defragmentation. Don't know what to do. Any help would be nice. Defragmentation Result (Error?)

UBCD
And the same is happening in case of UBCD also, same Error 60, even after defragmentation. Same Defragmentation Result (Error?)

BackTrack 3 & BackTrack 4 :
Couldnt get either of the "bt3-final.iso" & bt4-final.iso to work on the USB. Copied boot folder into (inside) BT3 folder. Copied BT3 folder to the root of the USB. It is not working. Just get a blank screen. So i tried the "bt3-final.iso" under VMWare. Meaning used the iso as a virtual CD (CDRom) in VMWare, it works there. So bt3-final.iso file is not corrupt as it works in VMWare. Something is going wrong in USB mode.
Similarly for the BackTrack 4, works in VMWare, but doesnt work in USB environment.

Kaspersky 2010
Starts to boot and reached upto a certain stage ("unpacking firmware") and than my monitor goes into standby mode( meaning monitor goes off, can see the monitor light blinking in power save mode). Tried 3-4 times , the same thing happens. Tried in VMWare and also it doesnt work there too. Reaches upto this stage : Unpacking Firmware Stage. So Kaspersky also doesnt work.
Sorry couldnt get a clearer picture.

Hiren
Extracted the HBCD using UltrISO, copied it to the root of USB. It boots fine, gives me a menu to choose from (say Ghost program). But fails at the "OakCDRom.sys" stage. Meaning it says it has failed to load oakcdrom.sys, and finally goes to say can't find HBCD folder.
Fails to load OAKCDROM.SYS
When i tried this "Hiren_s.BootCD.10.6.iso" in VMWare it works fine. I have even tried the hiren cd in a multiboot DVD environment where one has to extract the HBCD folder just like in this USB case and put it in the root of the multiboot DVD, over there it works fine. Can't get this to work on the USB.

Thanks for taking time to read this post, hoping to get some help to get this USB working...thanks in advance.

The filesystem on the USB is probably defragmentated.
You can try to defragmentate the USB. I had the same problem with Ylmf OS on Grub4dos. The only thing that worked for me was to backup the files on the USB, format the USB and copy the files back.

Thankxs for the reply Pazzie B)

The only thing that worked for me was to backup the files on the USB, format the USB and copy the files back.

Backup as in copy/paste the files on the usb to a different location (say like onto another hardisk?). And formatting using normal windows format or using some specialised program.

Any solution as to what could be done to make backtrack, or hiren or kaspersky work. :dubbio:

You're welcome.

Yes, that's what I did (quick format). I'm not sure if you have to reïnstall Grub4dos to the MBR of the USB after a quick format. Maybe you could also delete all the files on the USB instead of formatting the USB.

- About Parted Magic:
Did you download the Grub4dos version of Parted Magic (http://sourceforge.n...so.zip/download)?
I'm using it with this menu.lst entry:
title Parted Magic 5.1 (Partition Tools)

find --set-root /pmagic-5.1.iso

map /pmagic-5.1.iso (hd32)

map --hook

root (hd32)

chainloader (hd32)

- Bitdefender:
I'm not sure about it either. Since it's based on Xubuntu, the menu.lst entry probably have to look something like the Ubuntu Netbook Edition entry.

- Backtrack 4:
About a week ago I tried Backtrack 4. I extracted the iso to the root of my USB and used this menu.lst entry:
title BackTrack 4 Final (Penetration Testing)

root (hd0,0)

kernel /boot/vmlinuz BOOT=casper boot=casper persistent rw splash

initrd /boot/initrd.gz

boot
Maybe you can try that.

- Kaspersky:
Kaspersky does boot correct from my USB, but it doesn't recognize my USB keyboard and mouse (when I have to agree with the EULA). No problems when I use a ps/2 keyboard and mouse. This is my menu.lst entry:
title Kaspersky Rescue CD (Virus Scanner)

map /rescue/rescue.iso (0xff)

map --hook

root (0xff)

chainloader (0xff)

Hi Pazzie

Thanxs for the information :dubbio: ......it has helped me in some ways.
By formatting the USB, it resolved some of the installations. I was able to get UBCD, Bactrack 4 working which were not working previously.

Hiren
The problem with Hiren was this. I was able to get the Mini Win XP option of Hiren working but was not able to get hiren to work in DOS option mode. The reason (fault) for this was lying somewhere else. When i followed the tutorial till Step 10 everything was going fine. At step 11 where you have to copy the WIN XP setup files to the USB, after doing everything , the moment i use to press "GO" i was getting this error
Posted Image
By f_ms at 2010-07-24
And after a few seconds without i doing anything it would continue to go about copying (the very next screen)
Posted Image
By f_ms at 2010-07-24
It would copy all the WinXP files, everything would go fine, even i could install WINXP, but for some reason this was affecting the proper running of Hiren in DOS mode. So the solution which i used to get Hiren working in DOS mode option was like this, followed upto step 10 of the manual, than used Grub4Dos Installer like this
Posted Image
By f_ms at 2010-07-24
and after doing this when i tried to copy the WinXP files as in step 11 of the manual, it didn't give the error "Could Not Install grub4dos bootsector. Will attempt to install to MBR". In other words it went smooth. And also i was able to get Hiren to work in DOS mode option too, alongwith WINXp setup, WIn 7 setup and the rest.

I am still trying to figure out how to get Backtrack 3, Kaspersky & Bitdefender to work, as these still give problem.

Hello
Just was wondering is it possible to make a AIO-Portable hardisk, meaning, i have a 1TB WD my passport external HDD, which i have divided into 2 partitions. One is a 50GB fat32 and the next is a 880 GB NTFS. Was wondering is it possible to make the 50GB fat 32 partition to boot and work in the same manner as the AIO-USB (mission impossible USB). If somebody could point me in the right direction (that is if this is possible), would be mighty glad. :dubbio:

Hi fms,

I'm glad that some of your problems are solved now.

Currently, i'm using Firefox from the new BitDefender ISO :dubbio:.
I'm quite new to Grub4dos, but I managed to boot the new BitDefender ISO with this menu.lst entry:
title BitDefender Rescue CD

find --set-root /BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso

map /BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso (0xff)

map --hook

root (0xff)

kernel /casper/vmlinuz boot=casper persistent iso-scan/filename=/BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso splash

initrd /casper/initrd.gz

You have to put BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso in the root of your USB.

About the portable HDD. Maybe you can take a look at this webpage:
http://www.pendrivel...-multiboot-usb/. Maybe you can try their Experimental-MultiBootISOs-v1.5.9.exe.

Thanxs for the bitdefender.iso code  , will give a try with that code. About that Experimental-MultiBootISOs-v1.5.9.exe, i had tried it before without much success, but 2day will check it again.
The bitdefender.iso, which has worked for you, from which weblink did you download it, so that i could try with the same iso.

Hey FMS,

I ordered a 1TB toshiba portable HDD and was looking at doing the exact same thing.. I want to partition it and run the MIUSB on one partion and then put my back ups and possibly a virtual copy of my win7 on the other partion.. would be glad to hear how you get it working if it requires anything different..

Also,, with the current update of the MISUB pdf, was there any changes you had to make while doing it? be great to find out if did.. right now I am going to try and do part 1 and 3 of the pdf untill i can get the 600+mb downloads onto my machine..then I will add that portion as well.. just hoping it wont be an issue as reviewing it, looks like part3 is just a bunch of copying over data, so I would think it should be ok..

Thanks,
Zug

Hi Pazzie

Thanxs a ton friend you have been of lot of help  , the code for bitdefender menu.lst, it worked with the new BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso. Just put the iso in the usb root and put the code you so kindly provided into the menu.lst and it just breezed (worked like a charm). The results are here to see. I am also using the bitdefender live iso firefox web browser as of now while writing to you this post.

With your valuable information  i have managed to resolve 5 out of the 7 problems which i had 2 days back. Only Backtrack 3 and Kaspersky have remained unsolved, but the rest all have worked with your help.

@Zug
I will try a couple of things to check if the portable 1TB HDD works, meaning if i can get it to boot like MIUSB. If i succeed will surely post it here. As of now for a full day it has not given any results. I am going to transfer all the data (200GB) from the 1 TB portable HDD, than format it and see if i can use it as a MIUSB. Will let you know of the results.
Also about the way the different iso's worked for my USB, (mostly followed the manual), but had to make a few changes after taking all the valuable & precise information provided by Pazzie. Will go through it again (as i tried a lot of things, so i will have to check the correct information, and i will let you know about it. Give me a day for that.

Hi
Couldn't get the portable 1 TB external HDD working in MIUSB mode, just doesn't bring up boot screen. I formatted the HDD to FAT32, made one whole partition, the WinSetupFromUSB 0.2.3.exe gives a warning about the disk being very large. But goes about doing it's stuff, everything looks fine, but it just won't boot. , so for now if somebody else has some suggestions, would give a try.

@Zug
If you are able to get the portable HDD working let me know about it.

About the way i went doing the MIUSB on pendrive:-
Most of the procedure is the same as provided so kindly by Jamal from the manual. Here is the Menu.lst which i have used (please click to download). and open it in notepad if you want to make changes.
Procedure:-
01.OPHCRACK XP & Vista (follow as in manual , same worked for me)
02.UBCD (follow as in manual , same worked for me) (only since it was giving Error 60 i first tried formatting the ubcd.iso using Wincontig as specified in the manual, but still was giving problem so than i reformatted the USB, and did everything again and this time it worked.)(Info provided by Pazzie in Post 15)In other words incase you get Error 60, either you use Wincontig and if it doesn't work than format usb (fat32) and do the full MIUSB procedure from the manual again.)
03.Bactrack 4 (follow as in manual , same worked for me) (after formatting usb and doing everything again it worked -- so problem was the USB was defragmented and that's why Backtrack 4 was not working)
04.HIREN (basic procedure same as in manual, but since DOS option was not working i followed the procedure as in POST 19 , but first try as in manual, as in my case i don't know if the problem was more specific to my hardware. Hiren DOS mode option
CODE

title Hiren's Boot CD 10.6
find --set-root /HBCD/boot.gz
map --mem /HBCD/boot.gz (fd0)
map --hook
chainloader (fd0)+1

04.Linux Mint, Ubuntu Netbook Edition, Ubuntu Rescue Disk, YLMF, Live hacking CD, Partition Wizard Home Edition, DBan, Macrium, AVG, Konboot (follow as in manual , same worked for me)
05.Parted Magic 5.1
Put this menu.lst CODE (same is already there in the menu.lst file which i have uploaded). Refer to POST 17 by Pazzie where he gave this code

title Parted Magic 5.1 (Partition Tools)
find --set-root /pmagic-5.1.iso
map /pmagic-5.1.iso (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd32)
chainloader (hd32)

Put this in the root of the USB
Parted Magic 5.1.iso Download Link Provided by Pazzie
06. Win XP Setup & Win 7 Setup (follow as in manual , same worked for me)
07.Bitdefender
Use this CODE in menu.lst as provided by Pazzie in POST 21

title BitDefender Rescue CD
find --set-root /BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso
map /BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
kernel /casper/vmlinuz boot=casper persistent iso-scan/filename=/BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso splash
initrd /casper/initrd.gz

You have to put BitDefender-Rescue-CD.iso (download link) in the root of your USB.
08. Kaspersky & Backtrack 3 still not been able to make them work, incase there is a solution let me know.

@ZUG.....i hope this procedure will help you to get your MIUSB working as i have used, these above steps to make mine work. Basically everything is like in the manual, only slight changes were in case of Hiren, Parted Magic, Bitdefender, and formatting of whole USB to make the various ISOs work. All the rest is the same.
