Kaspersky 2011 Rescue USB How to make-Tutorial Guide

This is my third update on the subject, because of hundreds of emails from readers asking me to input everything again in one tutorial, mentioning also other best possible methods to update this rescue USB, so here we are:

Method # 1:
1- You need at least a 1 GB or better USB 2.0 or better empty thumb drive.
2- You need to work with elevated privileges (Run as administrator) if you are working from Windows 7 or Vista.
3- Download the latest (kav_rescue_10.iso) image from its official direct download link HERE, it’s a 195 MB download in size, save it to your desktop.
4- Download the (Kaspersky_Essentials.zip) file from HERE, it’s a 15.7 MB download in size, save it to your desktop, after download is complete, EXTRACT it to your desktop, you should see 5 folders as follows:

Posted Image

5- Open folder # 1 and execute (usb_disk_storage_format.exe) and follow steps below:

Posted Image
Posted Image

6- Open folder # 2 and execute (grubinst_gui.exe), follow steps below:

Posted Image

7- Open folder # 3 and copy all its contents to the USB thumb drive, they should look like this now:

Posted Image

8- Now we need to update the virus-definitions of the (kav_rescue_10.iso) image you downloaded in step # 3 above, before we can use it, so if you are going to use this USB thumb drive on a PC connected to the internet, then you can skip this step, and proceed to the step # 14, because you can download the updates from the internet, otherwise if you need to offline update the ISO image, then open folder # 4, and copy (kav_rescue_10.iso) image inside that folder, it should look like this:

Posted Image

9- Now execute (START.exe), you should 1st see this popup window, press OK to proceed, this will take an hour or more to finish and produce the new updated ISO image:

Posted Image

10- In few seconds the update will start, and it may take an hour or more to finish depending on your internet speed:

Posted Image

11- When done you should see this popup window informing you that the new updated ISO image is created, press OK to exit:

Posted Image

12- This is the new ISO image that is created:

Posted Image

13- IMPORTANT: If the updating suddenly disappear, and you do not see what in steps 11 & 12 above, that means the internet got disconnected for moments causing the operation to be terminated, so don’t worry, go Execute the (START.exe) again, it will continue from where it left.

14- Now after you’ve done and you got the (kav_rescue_2011.iso) image ready, I want you to rename it to (rescue.iso) and copy it inside(rescue) folder inside the USB thumb drive:

Posted Image

15- What’s inside (rescue) folder should look like this;

Posted Image

16- Now the root of the USB should look like this:

Posted Image

17- Now the USB thumb drive is updated & ready to be tested, now when you boot your PC with this USB thumb drive you should see this screen first, press ENTER to proceed :

Method # 2:
2011 Kaspersky Anti-Virus & Internet Security, both include a special utility tool which allows you to create a Rescue Disk ISO image, and update that image, and also you can record that image to the USB thumb drive, to achieve those steps you need to have one of the Kaspersky 2011 Anti-Virus or Internet Security installed on your PC, or if you do have another Anti-Virus software, then you can try Install any of the Kaspersky apps mentioned above on a Windows based Virtual machine, so in this case you do not mess up your system.

Kaspersky 2011 AV or IS are not free but they are available as trial versions, and that’s good enough for us to make a Rescue ISO image and update it and record it to a USB thumb drive, you can download the trial versions as follows:

- Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 – download trial from HERE.
- Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 - download trial from HERE.

After you download and install Kaspersky 2011, activate the trial version to get the full options of the program, then update it, then after that go to the tools menu, and choose the Rescue CD creation wizard, you will be asked if you want to download an ISO image from the net or browse to an already image you have on your PC, then after that you can update that ISO image:

Posted Image

After updating your downloaded ISO image or the existing one you already have, you will have the choice to either save that image for later use, like burn to CD, or record it to a USB thumb drive; you can do both choices simultaneously:

Posted Image

Method # 3:
Another fast method to record the Rescue Disk ISO image on USB is by using this Kaspersky USB rescue Disk Maker, you can find it inside folder # 5 mentioned in step #4/Method #1 above.

Hi,

Tanks for the tutorial, can the virus definitions be updated without booting from the USB key?

Is there any way to update virus definitions for use with this? Perhaps you could split it up into two parts, so that the newer definitions can be loaded?

Nice tutorial Jamal.
I see that the download link for Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2011 is from Mediafire.Looks like you have uploaded the rescue disk to mediafire.

Can you please tell me official download links for Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2011?

Are you not violating any rules or terms or conditions when you share the Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2011?

Looks like you have slightly modified my Kaspersky Rescue Disk Updater .

Are you calling kav_rescue_10.iso as Kaspersky Rescue 2011 after updating the bases??

So Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2011 is nothing but the Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2010 with updated definitions??

i have an adsl pppoe type connection to the internet and i'm trying to make it work in this kaspersky rescue disk.
i've checked and the kernel module exists for pppoe suport, it's in /lib/modules/2.6.31-gentoo-r6/kernel/drivers/net/pppoe.ko, it can be loaded with modprobe. an lsmod | grep pppoe after confirmes that it's working, the problem tho is that the ppp package is missing, the one that actualy provides the config/binaries to connect via pppoe, i'm still new to linux and i'm having trouble figuring out how to add it in.
btw the rescue disk uses gentoo linux if it helps with anything.

Do you suppose there is any way to add this to my Win7 PE bootable USB?

@r6xual

assuming you use grub as a bootloader for your Win7 PE bootable USB all you have to do is copy the "rescue" directory and the grldr and live usb files into the root of your stick and edit your menu.lst (the one on your Win7 PE bootable USB) and add:

title Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2011\n
map (hd0,0)/rescue/rescueusb.iso (0xff) || map --mem (hd0,0)/rescue/rescueusb.iso (0xff)
map --hook
chainloader (0xff)

to the existing options in there and it should work. don't rename the rescue directory to anything else since the gentoo linux that boots is set to look there for rescue.iso

The additional links are not necessary and usually unwanted in our forum.

And in addition, agni's post causes me to have some doubts.

My thanx to both Jamal and Belegere of Agnipulse for their efforts.

I had tried using Kaspersky's Rescue disk some time back but I think it gave me trouble or didn't quite work the way I had been looking to achieve. Bitdefender was another one that seem to work but just went to a blank screen and started thrashing around my drive without allowing me any options or even viewing what was going on.

I ended putting most of them to the way side as did I with several other items that just didn't seem to work out in the Linux world. It was rather upsetting to waste more time then needed. Linux and Linux modified distro's have come a long way and I look forward to their future.

Avira was another I ended up tossing. It would load and give me a main menu screen, the mouse would move around and such but would not allow me to choose anything past the initial screen.

Hi Jamal.

First of all thanks for the great manual you made ! Your efforts are appreciated very much.
I have made manuals posted on sites myself and when I make any manual I apply the rule that I post the contents of the manual in the thread I create for it so that it can be clearly seen what the contents of any download will be. Wheater it be an application or only a (pdf) text file. And if there is a good reason not to post the content in the thread itself then I will state the very reason in the thread.
Transparency is essential on a web filled with malware.
Btw I scanned your pdf with Eset Nod32 and it was found to be safe.

Please consider my reply as constructive criticism, I still have the highest regard for your work !

Sincerely,

William

thnx for both jamal&agni for their efforts but as i know the updater is not made by agni :hi: it is a kaspersky thing and agni wrote a code to automate the proces..and jamal brilliantly provided us with a full package for anyone can use..as i see jamal put the missing files and also provided the usb maker and re-wrote the code with attractive automation and put everything in one easy package everyone can understand.so thank you agni first and more thanks to jamal to provide an easy to follow solution :dubbio: and yes its a 2011 rescue cd not 2010 agni.
