well as "Master of Disaster" mentions, the good and important thing about this tutorial is that we do above process "without the use of third party software" when we stick behind the log on screen!? of course, there are too many other ways. But all ways I know that I had to use third party programs when I stick behind log on screen!

Do you know any other way to bypass this log on screen without using any third party programs and change the password?! If yes, We will be happy to hear and learn it from you?!

I did experience the same issue several times after installing a new OS, so IMHO the more solutions are provided the better.

It might be good to present a collection of methods to reset the password (some were mentioned here) - may be in a different tutorial - so that a user can pick a method he/she is most comfortable with given their situation.

@ sambul61..my friend common..they're only 4 first time posters!!how about the rest of the 14 top pros who loved this method/tutorial..including the notorious (Wonko the Sane)!! who expressed his love to JAMAL's work !! despite he also as usual missed the point that the title of this tutorial is obviously saying (without the use of third party software)that Wonko the Sane obviously didn't see it when he posted about other ways to do this using 3rd party software..so sambul61 my friend they don't have to forget their windows password to love this post..despite the fact that everyone must have been experienced this situation..don't you agree?

For the record, Wonko the Sane did notice the thread title AND suggested ANOTHER method that needs NOT any third party software:

is about Windows XP early edition witch obviously doesnt work on Windows 7..and it is not about resetting passwords or anything like that..it is about (How to login to an expired Windows XP) and the method does not say windows 7 and it does not work with windows 7..and it is completely a different subject not related to this post..

and as of mentioning other methods regarding using 3rd party software so everybody has the chance to read and know different methods I see that as OK to me and I see it also a useful additions that will enrich the subject here..and I wish we can see not just words but step by step tutorials to be added here by anyone whom have an experience in this so we all benefit from..

its a good tutorial, but for new/inexperienced/average users there are much safer, quicker and easier ways to do the job. which is one of the points I believe wonko was trying to convey.

Yep , exactly, but more than that trying to make other (possibly less experienced) users aware of possible variations/alternatives/things to experiment with.

Hi allz, thx jamal this method is very good, and i like it,
Another method is to start booting from a windows 7 or vista install dvd,(32 or 64 bits doesn't matter)
and when the first install screen appear, where the user can select language, timezone
or keyboard language by pressing shift + f10 keys a command prompt window will appear and you can type the copy commands for sethc.exe file

I read posts like this, less for necessity (I've personally used CHNTPW for at least seven years, during which time, it's never failed), more as a tech person who likes to see novel, new things revealed about the OS. Also, I've always wished I had the time/contacts/info/etc. to do this sort of revelation.

Regarding the sniping earlier in the thread, it's been completely overlooked by some, that regardless of whether one uses third-party software or MSOFT-ware exclusively, one must have a bootable CD/DVD and flash drive (of some kind) to remove Windows passwords. The OP's solution is great for newbies, who routinely have trouble making custom bootable CD/DVDs, so having a ready-made script/explanation and single-source for the tools is a big help for novices. OTOH, if you've been doing this for a while, you already have tools that you're happy with, so this topic isn't as helpful for that segment.

By default password encryption is not reversible. When you login in what is being tested is the encrypted version of the typed password against the original encrypted version.

Passwords are guessed by comparing the encrypted version of the guessed password against the encrypted version.

What to do if you forget your Windows password
If you've forgotten your Windows password and you're on a domain, you should contact your system administrator to reset your password. If you're not on a domain (most home users are not on a domain), you can reset your password by using a password reset disk or by using an administrator account.

Create a password reset disk:

1. Load a program and burn it to a bootable CD/USB on another computer

2. Set the locked computer to boot from CD/USB

Hi all, Thanks to the original poster for this topic, saved me a lot of hassle and worked exactly as it states. Now i am not the sharpest knife in the draw but some days i come up with what appear to be shortcuts ( i am really quite lazy).

Can someone explain the flaws in this and why i should not do it, i have tried it and so far no problems have arisen. Anyway to explain, i have followed the original instructions to the letter up and including step 26, but whilst inside the now unlocked account i have just accessed the Windows\system32 folder and renamed/deleted/etc the CMD/Utilman files as laid out in steps 37 -35.

Saves me having to log off, reboot from the usb, manually type the commands etc then reboot again

Obviously i don't get the option to check Utilman.exe is working from the lower left of the login screen until i next login but running the exe file within ...windows\system32 folder shows it is working. Many thanks in advance

the one in the video just posted uses the  "sticky keys variant" using sethc.exe, but accessed through the "notepad trick", which if I recall correctly, was actually introduced in 7 (and possibly remained in 8).

If you get to the screen around 3:30 in the video you may also be able to use Explorer (or the "default browser" on the link above the .txt one)

Hi guys just tried this regedit trick on win7 ....... works on XP too (wiv 3rd party app)

 

 

did'nt work on win7 ultimate as it required password for the <F8> repair option

I tried this but I have a problem. I am trying to reset the administrator password. I have renamed the administrator account and when I tried to use that name it created a new standard user account with the name of my administrator account. How can I change the administrator account?

OK, I've solved my problem  and reset my windows password with iSeePassword Windows password recovery tool, it woks fine, but need a USB or CD,DVD to create a boot disk, and boot your computer from USB or DVD mode.
