I have a bunch of drive that were listed as 256GB when I bought them.

The first one appears to be 8GB.

 

I am not sure of the process to go through to make it useable.

Well, first you should go back to whoever you bought them from and complain! How much did you pay for these 8GB or 16GB drives?

If you want to try to get them to work, the easiest thing to do is just format them to their actual capacity (then test with H2TESTW).

OR (risky) use a utility to make it report the correct size. See http://www.rmprepusb...usb-flash-drive

I bought the a while back from china.  DHgate.com has tons of them out there. pages and pages of them.

 

I tried running Install_RMPrepUSB_Full and it did not recognize it when I wanted to format it.  It still wanted to format it at 256GB, not 8GB.  The computer I am running has 4 internal drives, a couple of external  and a couple of USB flash drives.  Do I need to run it on another computer without all that stuff connected to it?

absofreakinglootley! I have learned this the hard way.. not with RMPrepUSB but other tools. I dont do anything of this nature without first disconnecting everything except the target and most of the time I boot a ram image in a system with no internal drive connected for these things.

The Fakeflashtest is indicating that 16 GB is good, the chipgenius output is saying there is 8GB - not sure who is right???

 

RMPrepUSB will ask the drive what size it is and sets the Size box to MAX so it will be formatted as 256GB. You need to set the Size box to 16000 so that its is formatted as 16GB. Then test it either by filling it with 16GB of photos and then viewing them in Thumbnail view in Explorer to check they all look good, or run H2TESTW which will check all the empty filespace in the 16GB volume.

 

If that doesn't work try setting the size to 8000 and test again.

 

The other alternative is to reprogram the device using a manufacturing tool for Alcor controllers - this can be dodgy and may brick the device! Also, some older tools only run on Win XP or Win7 32-bit only. See here for details.
