Competition Goal for 2012: A Barebone Win7PE

Before the end of the year, we'd like to give a good farewell to Win 7 in reboot style.

Note: You need to present your projects on this competition before the end of this year.

Note: To see who won this competition, please visit http://reboot.pro/17801/#168335

We'll award the coolest and most fashionable Win7PE project bellow 100Mb. The prize is an ISOstick from http://www.isostick.com/

Requirements
- Overall size bellow 100Mb (compression is allowed)
- Windows Explorer must work
- Use a tool at your choice to automate the building steps (winbuilder, batch scripts, anything goes)

Call your friends to help, try the craziest things that come to your mind and post here on this topic your proposals for others to try out and give feedback. If the winner of this competition is supported by another forum across the web then a URL back to the supporting forum will be mentioned on reboot award.

Everyone: We need help spreading the word. Please post the link to this topic on your google-plus or other favorite forum sites around the Internet. The more people knowing about this event, the better. Thanks! :)

The goal is to have fun and squeeze those megabytes to fit the limits. The 2012 winner of the light-weight Win7 PE competition will be announced on the end of December.

Additional notes (from questions of participants)
- Not restricted to Windows PE, if you manage to make a mini-Windows 7 within the requirements it is accepted
- The winner takes the award, the other participants get ranked and listed accordingly (2nd, 3rd, ..., positions)
- Teams are accepted. Work with your friends
- Publish early, get feedback early. We will only review new works until the 23rd of December. Present your work early to get feedback early or it might not be considered at all
- No ready-made ISOs please. Microsoft restricts the distribution of their files, therefore we need to be able of building your project using some automated tool (winbuilder, batch scripts, whatever you like to use)

What counts
- There is no world record established for the minimum sized Windows 7 install so this is a good opportunity to present the slimmest Windows 7 to date.
- After reaching the minimum of 100Mb required to apply, the look, functionality and size count

Have fun!

I want to join but "should be prepared by winbuilder part" makes it impossible. Is there a hope the rules can change?

I have stolen it from a chineese one :) but changed the languaged and had more work on it and it works better now. Can i say i made it?

The rules are flexible, it needs to be build somehow by other folks around our community in a legal manner. This means that no ready-made ISO can be distributed. Find a way of replicating the chinese ISO results using a Windows source as base for the files that cannot be distributed.

I've done something like this many years ago using simple tools like a batch script and some edits, look here for an example of code that you can use: http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=12067

NUNO!!! the ISOSTICK is sold out!!

Yep. I've talked directly with the author and he guaranteed we would have one ISOSTICK exclusively available for our competition. :)

Or possibly a little more updated, simply peruse the wimb's makePE3 as a builder.... :whistling:
http://reboot.pro/in...showtopic=11852

BTW, and completely OT, is good :) to know that the little kickstarter project had success, and such a BIG one as to risk having people making agiotage or however stockpiling :w00t: ;)

I agree.

One note, for those interested in using Wimb's work: please be sure to ask his permission and always include his name (and URLs) on the credits to make fair use of his effort. As point of rule, always provide credits to other authors where credits are due. It is fair for other authors and keeps the community effort going forward.

Does it really have to be a PE?

Good question my friend.

If you manage to make a mini-windows 7 fitting within the 100Mb, I'd say this counts as extra points for creativity. :)

I've added a notes section on the first topic where I am keeping relevant information asked by participants (either public or by PM).

Suggest Win7PE:

Boot kernel (WIM): ~ 85Mb (support Network, Media, USB3.0) Explorer

Integrated Firadisk:

Create a folder on the flash (ISO), and put the image:

title Win7PE(x86USB3)(Firadisk)
map --mem (md)0x800+4 (99)
map /ISO/Win7PE(x86USB3).iso (0xff)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map --hook
write (99) [FiraDisk]nStartOptions=cdrom,vmem=find:/ISO/Win7PE(x86USB3).iso;n0
chainloader (0xff)/BOOTMGR || chainloader (0xff)

Suggest Win7PE:

Hi Doberman,

Beautiful design, I particularly enjoy the boot screen customization.

However, other members need to be able of building your work using their own Windows 7 source. For this reason, we cannot use ready-made ISO images. It needs to either be made available as a some modified winbuilder project at your choice or batch script that allows automating the building steps so that we avoid troubles with Microsoft.

:)

Hi Nuno Brito!

Thanks for the tip!
Everything is made on the basis of WinBuilder.

There is nothing which requires a license.

What about modifying the script, I'm not strong.

Ok then.

You probably don't need to modify the scripts, just share your current definitions. I can help and explain how this gets done, but let's open a new topic to keep this one dedicated solely to the competition. Can you please open up a new topic at the wb dev section? You find it here: http://reboot.pro/forum/7-development/

I wouldn't know where to start with this but I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with.

I was thinking once of using Win7PE to make a 512MB P3 into a RDP terminal but when I realised there wasn't really any advantage for RDP over XP, I just used LiveXP instead but there's been some recent updates to RDP in Win7 that might make it worth looking at again, so hopefully someone manages to incorporate those updates into their entry ;)

@Nuno
Since you ask for the 'coolest' Win7 PE under 100MB, mayne changing the requirements from "Explorer must work" to "Must have graphical shell and filemanager" would be better.

Gives the developers a bit more wiggle room.

I'd say then it becomes too easy for everyone. Without Explorer it gets easily bellow the 50Mb range when pushing it up with UPX and WIM compression.

I am open minded to accept proposals without the Explorer shell, however, they would be seen as "easier" to achieve when compared to the explorer based ones. To mark points on this race, the proposal would have to be a heck of a build to sweep out the others.

Let's see what people come up with, this should be fun. :)

Just to clarify, you need to provide the means for end-users to build the same result on their side. No redistribution of Microsoft files is allowed.

But providing links to them is not redistributing them.... :dubbio:

Censorship of such links could possibly help to discourage "pirated" software. It might also help to avoid a reputation of "this web-site is where to find pirated software."

You are right. And to the site policies cover this matter:
Contributions to the Forum must not:
...
infringe any copyright, database right, trade mark or any other intellectual property, confidentiality or privacy rights of any person or organisation; or
• otherwise violate any law. In addition, your contribution must not post a link to a website that contains, or directly links to, material that contravenes any of these standards. In particular, you must not post a link to:
...
• unlawful material (such as material that condones or encourages unlawful acts, breaches intellectual property law or encourages others to do so, hacks or causes technical disruption to online services or describes how to conduct an unlawful act).

..but noone enforces those site policies, which is good :), as the censorship is "by definition" a subjective action.

In the present thread there is a live link to a pre-made PE (while another one has been censored) this is not fair (which again is good :), as censorship is not fair).

Another member, which I won't name, has his site directly linking to a known warez release (which I will name as "Hiren's Boot CD") and there are hundreds of links from reboot.pro to this member's site, who also recently posted directly on the Forum - upon explicit provocation by yours truly :innocent: - a direct link to the the page dedicated to the above mentioned WAREZ release (to which BTW an entire section of this forum is dedicated).

UNless of course there are "good, tested WAREZ" and "untested and thus not good WAREZ", i.e. "approved" ones and "non-approved" ones, which again is good :) as dotted, S shaped lines are much more nice looking than straight, neat, continuous ones, which are so dull.
