Hello,

I'm a new member in this forum.

Working in a IT service, I've to build a "LIVE XP" solution, but as it's not my speciality.. I'm looking all "HOW TO" on the net. and found your community.

In this topic I do not ask for a Step by step process to get the LIVE XP.

But, just the confirmation if that I'm thinking about LIVE XP is right, or if I'm totally wrong.

First, the need :

As many company, we must leave XP OS for Win7. Even almost all our software can work under Win7 few of them can't run...

I proposed a solution "XP MODE" in order to continue to work on these software.

But, our security team does not like this solution and ask for another one "LIVE XP"...

This LIVE XP, have to get our software pre-installed.

Second, What is LIVE XP ?

For me, LIVE XP means a CD/DVD or USB containing an XP OS able to run in RAM.

The user plug his media, boot on it, and can work directly on this XP, without impact on the HDD (where Win7 is installed)

But, when I read some topics/documentation on the Net, I figure out that the most common apps "BartPE"  is not made for "working" but for "FIXING" some issue on the real OS of the PC..

Third, WinBuilder :

Also, I've read here about another tool called "WinBuilder", I read (quickly) the Tuto "Newcomer's Tutorial - LiveXP, Win7PE & Portable Apps!" Honestly it's not totally clear to me..

I know I've to get an RAW XP Os image, (I will get it soon)

I ran WinBuilder, and got a command line interface. but on Winbuilder website I can see some dialog box (GUI).. there is another source in Graphic mode ??

So, Am I right ? is an LIVE XP the right method to "work" on XP in RAM ? without any installation, and not just for Repairing system ?

Thank you for your help.

LiveXP is the "wrong" name given to one of the Winbuilder projects.

The scope of the LiveXP project is to make a "live" OS alright, but NOT an XP, but rather a PE (Pre-install Environment) 1.x (i.e. more or less exactly the same thing as Bart's PEbuilder).

The original intended scope of any PE is to be used as "Pre-install Environment" or "emergency" or "temporary" Operating System, but over the years any number of more or less "crazy" people :w00t: have managed to make it evolve in something that can run any kind of "crazy" things .

Of course the more programs/tools/subsystems the build supports the more complex is (generally speaking) to have it built successfully.

You seemingly miss the "historical notions" (and also some basics :w00t:), please read this:

http://reboot.pro/to...the-difference/

Once you will have a clearer idea of what the LiveXP project is, you should IMHO forget about what you asked (a CD/DVD or USB containing an XP OS able to run in RAM) and state the actual scope (or goal) for which you asked the question.

The issue here is that an OS entirely in RAM is usually of very little use as for it every day is a new day (i.e. any setting/preference/whatever) is "volatile" and will not survive a reboot.

Just as an example, if the idea is having a very "vertical" system, like having a PC in the hall of a hotel meant for ONLY browsing - say - airport and railway sites/timetables (but with NO provision to save anything, nor print it) such a RAM only OS (or PE) would be appropriate (and also relatively easy to assemble/build) BUT if the same build has to boot on several different systems and/or support several different - still say - printers, the thingy suddenbly becoms not suitable/not convenient.

There may be alternate different solutions to the problem, like some "real" and "portable"  XP (not entirely running in RAM or fully running in RAM).

Since you talked about an "IT service", please consider that from a Legal standpoint a PE needs a dedicated license, and it is anyway very debatable if it can be used as OS replacement.

Of course if the PE 1.x is used for recovery purposes on the same machine where a XP license is present, there is no need of an additional license (as only one system is running at any given time).

Thank you for your feedback. I will read the document you have linked.

I agree, I also prefer a normal Virtual XP image .. (like XP MODE) and no-volatile system.

But, that was prohibited by our security team...

Hi,

I search about your "alternate" solution "Portable XP"

and found this topic : http://www.911cd.net...showtopic=23553

It's seems very interesting..but I thing some steps are missing.. because I was able to creante the VHD image without entering the SERIAL code..

and when I boot on the USB, I get the menu (Grub4dos) but I get an error 15 when I click on START as asked..

I think, I will need to spend more time in test...

Is someone have already tried this tuto ?

Yep. :)

Error 15 is grub4dos error message for "cannot find file", so something went bad.

The methoid has worked and is working for thousands of people, so yes, you will need to try again.

Wimb has also a dedicated thread here on reboot.pro, here:
http://reboot.pro/to...-and-windows-7/

where you can talk "directly" with the Author.

Please understand however that apart the "hosting device" (the .vhd file) that approach is in no way different from a "plain" dual boot system, thus - from the little I have understood about the limitations that "security" is imposing you - it brings with it the same, if not worse, issues than XP mode.

Still, if you don't fully represent your needs, it will be tough to suggest you a solution (if existing), just as another example, this may also do :
