Should I assume that the current WIM structure as seen on Windows 7 is changing once again at Win8?
Thanks!

I have no trouble with install.wim using 7zip.
It does give a message the bootable wims (boot.wim and winre.wim ) are non-standard , but it opens them fine.
Are you using an old version of 7zip?
Try v9.25 upwards.

The bootable wim's are different.
That I think is why v9.25 was created .

Have a look at here :
7-Zip 9.28 alpha was released. This is a development version. Don't use 7-Zip 9.28 alpha to process important files and archives. If you need more stable version, you can use 7-Zip 9.25 alpha.
What's new after 7-Zip 9.25 alpha:
- LZMA2 now is default compression method for .7z format.
- 7-Zip now can update WIM archives.

Have you tried with peazip 4.6.1? (just to be clear, I haven't tried it on win8 WIMs, but it does open win7's.)
There are peazip "setup" and "portable" versions for Linux and Windows, x32 and x64.

Thanks for the suggestion, peazip looks very nice. I have installed the Linux version that you mention. Unfortunately the results are the same and does not recognize the WIM archive.@Nuno,

I will just run 7zip from a Windows machine tomorrow. Take care!
