My current computer uses a smallish SSD as system drive and temoparay storage for downloads.
Then from time to time the download cache gets purged onto two external 1,5 TB HDDs.

While this setup does work and saves money over having the raid in the computer constantly running/sleeping, i was wondering, if it wouldn't be possible to have the raid inside the computer, but being able to really switch it off, if not in use. ?

Which connection is currently? USB, e-sata, LAN, etc?

Is it an "enclosure" or literally a JBOD?

Can you add a physical electrical switch?

Can you reboot between "no Raid/Raid Off" and "Raid Enabled/Raid On"?

Would this:

do?

Sorry for the very readable post.
Havn't posted so long, completely forgot, that i need to edit a new post, for it to show up properly.

At the moment, i use an external enclosure, which is connected by USB3 and handles internally a mirror raid with 2 HDD.

Can you reboot between "no Raid/Raid Off" and "Raid Enabled/Raid On"?

I could, but i don't want to. ;)

Right now i get the backup station out of storage - set it up - connect it - copy the files - delete files from download cache - safe remove the BS - unlug it - put it back in storage.
Not a whole lot of work once or twice a month.
Just somewhat annoying.

The only reason my computer has no HDDs build in is powersaving. There's plenty of room in the case.
I could now rip the BS apart and put its contents into my computer. But i was hoping for a bit more elegant solution.

PS: What are JBOD?

JBOD is a (real) alternative storage architecture to RAID, it is "Just a Bunch Of Disks", it was a play on words, as the name is (to me) funny in itself, as I see a JBOD as literally (actually the way I use them sometimes) as any number of disks scattered around a table near the PC:

http://en.wikipedia....hitectures#JBOD

Example of Raid/JBOD adapter, actually looking like a JBOD:

http://usb.brando.co...12c042d015.html

The idea with asking questions, is that the other part to which you ask them would reply to them, BTW, five questions asked only two answers provided.

Anyway, the easiest "internal" replacement you can have is to get a card like:

http://www.adaptec.c...aii/aar-1220sa/

and the mentioned revosleep.

Or use (if you have it) an internal USB3 connector and a couple of "plain" USB 3 to Sata adapters, it seems to me like you don't really-really need hardware Raid, you can use Software raid seetings for those backups allright.
