hi TheHive,

do you have a usb flash with an LED indicator? I use a corsair voyager that has one that I use when havving USB boot problems on some systems because it blinks upon access. maybe your new device may not have enough power to boot from usb?

I think you need to find out what PMAP is for sure. I guess the device had limited documentation with it. if you can get to it directly then is there any way to boot grub4dos inside? like from internal storage and then boot into Plop.iso and try from there.

I can try a powered hub.

PMAP wont show up as choice until i have a USB stick in the usb hub connected to MeegoPad

Otherwise you just get

Please select boot device:
Windows Boot Manager        (Boots into installed Windows 8.1 on MeegoPad )

Enter Setup                          (ENTER's the BIOS screen)

I guess the device had limited documentation with it.

Yes!

I dont know how to do that.

Will try the Powered Hub, since without self power the Zalman dvd  Virtual enclosure seemed to not work either, but the self powered Dvd Drive did seem to show upbut didnt boot

Powered hub seems to result PMAP usb sticks booting into

Windows Boot manager

Yes, I have a usb flash with an LED indicator ! Shows up PMAP

With powered hub . There are 2 Usb connected, both show up as PMAP

The one with led indicator shows activity and has windows 8.1 setup files

do you have a usb thumbdrive with XP installed and booting successfully on other systems? or usb 7?

try one of these directly into usb port without a hub attached.

I would also disable - Intel TXE Configuration (Intel TXE: Intel Trusted Execution Engine driver)

I dont know what TXE is but it sounds like it may be what is preventing usb boot maybe.

I have no experience with w8 but it should be easy to install grub4dos on the internal HDD. anybody?

I think XP doesnt have UEFI support and might be the reason meegopad cant boot XP from USB.

hi TheHive,

it cant? have you tried it? (are you ready for a *real* challenge;-)

why would XP need support for UEFI since it is a bios replacement and I seem to recall you mentioned it had a legacy (bios) mode, no? also, I dont remember seeing anywhere that XP does not boot on UEFI systems? if fact I think I have booted it on one but now I will have to double check to be sure since you mention that.

if I can confirm this unit or a similar one will boot up XP then I would be in a rush to get one!

thanks

https://www.wave.com...lware-detection

American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) solution for UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which represents an overhaul of the computer boot environment, while still bearing similarities to the legacy BIOS (Basic Input Output System) it replaces

why would XP need support for UEFI since it is a bios replacement and I seem to recall you mentioned it had a legacy (bios) mode, no?

no, i didn't say  the meegopad had legacy (bios). I mentioned that i think you need the bios to have legacy bios in order to install Win Xp or windows 7.

American Megatrends did not give us UEFI/legacy bios in meegopad. We only get UEFI.

So trying to install XP on UEFi might be like when a

weiner dog humping a turtle!

also, I dont remember seeing anywhere that XP does not boot on UEFI systems?

Windows UEFI vs BIOS limitations

https://wiki.archlin...dia_limitations

"

Microsoft imposes limitations on which firmware boot mode and partitioning style can be supported based on the version of Windows used:

  • Windows XP both x86 32-bit and x86_64 (also called x64) (RTM and all Service Packs) versions do not support booting in UEFI mode (IA32 or x86_64) from any disk (MBR or GPT) OR in BIOS mode from GPT disk. They support only BIOS boot and only from MBR/msdos disk.
  • Windows Vista or 7 x86 32-bit (RTM and all Service Packs) versions support booting in BIOS mode from MBR/msdos disks only, not from GPT disks. They do not support x86_64 UEFI or IA32 (x86 32-bit) UEFI boot. They support only BIOS boot and only from MBR/msdos disk.
  • Windows Vista RTM x86_64 (only RTM) version support booting in BIOS mode from MBR/msdos disks only, not from GPT disks. It does not support x86_64 UEFI or IA32 (x86 32-bit) UEFI boot. It supports only BIOS boot and only from MBR/msdos disk.
  • Windows Vista (SP1 and above, not RTM) and Windows 7 x86_64 versions support booting in x86_64 UEFI mode from GPT disk only, OR in BIOS mode from MBR/msdos disk only. They do not support IA32 (x86 32-bit) UEFI boot from GPT/MBR disk, x86_64 UEFI boot from MBR/msdos disk, or BIOS boot from GPT disk.
  • Windows 8/8.1 x86 32-bit support booting in IA32 UEFI mode from GPT disk only, OR in BIOS mode from MBR/msdos disk only. They do not support x86_64 UEFI boot from GPT/MBR disk, x86_64 UEFI boot from MBR/msdos disk, or BIOS boot from GPT disk. On market, the only systems known to ship with IA32 (U)EFI are some old Intel Macs (pre-2010 models?) and Intel Atom System-on-Chip (Clover trail and Bay Trail) Windows Tablets. in which it boots ONLY in IA32 UEFI mode and ONLY from GPT disk.
  • Windows 8/8.1 x86_64 versions support booting in x86_64 UEFI mode from GPT disk only, OR in BIOS mode from MBR/msdos disk only. They do not support IA32 UEFI boot, x86_64 UEFI boot from MBR/msdos disk, or BIOS boot from GPT disk.

It probably had UEFI/legacy bios support.

thanks

I haven't read anyone booting XP 32bit from UEFI. If anyone finds a way other the a virtual machine, let us know.

Windows 10 will allow OEMs to not offer the ability to configure or disable secure boot on x86 systems.

Maybe a

BIOS/UEFI Firmware

update by American Megatrends Inc. (AMI) would do the trick
