I'm really pleased to see that the forum is back online. After trying to access the site on a daily basis since the beginning of December I was getting worried it was down for good.

Thanks to all involved for getting this treasure trove of information up and running.

And a belated happy new year to you all.

Hey, hello!

It was not easy to bring things back. The hosting company decided to cut access to the server because it was accused of sending spam emails. After investigation was not possible to find the culprit, still suspecting this was a false case scenario.

Anyways the hosting company only permitted a window of two hours to unlock access on the server for a specific IP address. Was doing a backup and then trying to bring it back up at another machine slowly.

Eventually all was copied and installed on the new server but then completely failing to get the database accepted on recent versions of MySQL which is now MariaDB by default on newer operating system distros. Was trying to make it compatible for days without success. Eventually had the idea to simply close port 25 and bother the hosting company again.

This time it worked and they simply unlocked the machine.  :glare:

Needless to say that things are still not very stable. But at least we have good backups and over next weeks we'll try to move the forum to a different hosting provider.

One possible idea is to install the older linux with older mysql and older php inside a VM like QEmu and then run from there. Never again have to worry about installs, just roll back a previous copy.

Anyways, my apologies for the delay to bring our forum back online. And a happy 2023 start

Good to hear from you Nuno. How are you?

Thanks for all of the work and taking the time to get the forum back up and running.

I'm not sure how practical it would be, however is a virtual private server an option for hosting? I had numerous issues with hosting services and ended up using vultr for my own site. I've not had any issues in the few years I've been using vultr - apart from my own stupidity when I forgot to renew my domain name :frusty:

Nice to see you here too Ed. I miss the old 911 forum.it was a sad day for me when that site went down.

I know that interest in boot disks and site activity is not what it was, however the knowledge and information spread across some sites is invaluable to me. I have also frequented the oven in the past - another great resource and another site with hosting issues -

After 10 years, The Oven dot org was unfortunately a victim of its own success. Leeching actions by web spiders and others put the site in breach of the hosting provider. Attempts to mitigate the damage were unsuccessful.

The sad news is that The Oven dot org has had to archive the forum so that at least its contents remain in the public domain.

Thank you for your support and participation. It is possible we may be able to initiate a new instance of the forum, leaving this for archive purposes. Time will tell.

The oven site is now back up, however most of the contents has been archived to old dot the oven dot org.

Whilst I hope reboot continues for many years, a static archive of this site may be worth considering in the future.

Whilst I hope reboot continues for many years, a static archive of this site may be worth considering in the future.

in the end, if the age and db with the current IPB software continue to be such a maintenance issue, a combination might not be a bad solution.

Create a static read only archive of the current forum and place it on a virtual machine that can be restored instantly if it dumps. (hint: might not be a bad solution for the old 911cd backup as well)

That not only keeps the invaluable knowledge alive, it also gives a chance to clean up/organize/consolidate the current topics and mess of subfourms and start fresh on a modern database with forum software that continues to be supported/updated.

Hello everybody,

happy to be able to read all of you again !

I've been worried too since the early days of december.

If there will be the need I'll be happy to contribute to the funding of a better solution to keep this precious forum safe and alive.

Happy new year to all of you and, quoting Alacran:

"Thanks Brito and erwan.l, and long live to reboot.pro"

Hi Guys,

I have been (way too) busy these last months and only now do I discover this thread.

I have done nothing there and all the credit goes to Brito :)

Not only for fixing this one but also for running this forum so many years!

Happy to see this old good forum is still here : there is so much knowledge, ideas, etc over here that it would be a terrible loss to see this place disappear.

Take care,

Erwan

Hey Nuno,

If you need a pair of hands, I am here.

Clearly the old forum software is a challenge (if not an issue...) but with a proper plan and a few pair of hands, i am pretty sure we can do something about it.

Cheers,

Erwan

hi guys, is there any chance to have the forum up and running the way it did a few months ago? Virgus and I are prepared to contribute, if need be. Should there be any cost to share, we are willing to cooperate.
