Hi Guys.  :)

I encountered some malware a few days ago and need to restore my Windows 11 c: drive.  My backups are done with the Windows 7 backup / restore app and while they have no problem being created I am unable to restore the image files.  The restore always fails with a:

"The system image restore failed.

Error details:  The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)"

I suspect the problem is tied to how the drives are referenced.  In Linux they are not the standard /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 but rather /dev/nvme0d1p1, /dev/nvme0d1p2.  And mounted USB drives are not /dev/sdb1 but rather /dev/sda1.

I tried the restore using my Recovery USB drive that was created by Windows 10 and when it failed I recreated it with Windows11 but that hasn't helped.

So how do I override the drive names so I can get the image restores to run?

What has Linux to do with Windows Restore?

I assume you are Legacy booting (not UEFI)?

As soon as you boot from the USb drive, remove it. Then run the Restore app.

Alternatively, if you have a Recovery ISO, copy it an E2B USB drive and rename the extension to .isoPE01

Hi Steve,

Linux has nothing to do with Windows Restore, or least I don't think so.

My machine is UEFI.

I have tried removing the USB drive after booting but it didn't help.

I do not have a Recovery ISO, I have Windows vhdx files from a Windows backup of the c: drive and EFI drive.

It's good to hear from you Steve.  It's been a long time.

-update

This what I got trying to restore when I removed the USB drive when it asked what keyboard to use.

- An Update -

Restored my C: drive, and EFI drive from a backup I had on a USB harddrive.  Did not remove the USB Recovery drive.

Only problem is the Windows Restore DELETED EVERY FILE ON MY DATA DRIVE!! :o

You know, where I keep ALL My Files separate from the OS files.  Pictures, Documents, Utilities, Grub2 files, etc, etc.

Well not a big problem, I'll just restore all My Files from my Windows' Backup I created last week.

Oh wait, the BackUp drive is BLANK also.

So, my standard safe convenient harddrive config of EFI, OS, DATA, BACKUPS now only has files on the EFI and OS drives.  Unbelievable

A month's worth of work upgrading to Windows 11 is gone.  :frusty:

So Windows' Restore problem is it can't handle backups on NVMe drives or it can't handle backups on the same harddrive as the OS.
