I believe Acronis or Macrium offer such features (to be checked).

Beware that these wont probably be free.

Or else, you can create your own WinPE, and burn it next to your backup file there.

Then, you will be able to test a greater ranger of (free) softwares.

Remember that DVD will limit you to about 9gigs of datas.

Even with a 50% compression rate, dont expect to backup more than about 20 gigs on DVD.

My 2 cents :)

Edit : I had written a "how to" in the past similar to your need, although my "how to" backups/restores from a network location.

Regards,

Erwan

This is really good for creating a recovery "PARTITION" during the installation process (and updating it too).  *BUT* it does a good job of emulating that type of a recovery solution...

If your looking for more of a bootable "solution" to restore image snapshots, your best bet is to look into the other tools mentioned as well as any other type of full image backup/restore process that can split the image based on selectable criteria (i.e. DVD sized chunks) and also restore them.

While this is NOT a free solution, I have used the Active@Disk tools to do this sort of a thing.  They also have tools to browse the image backup file if you only need to restore a few files.

So, it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish, and not so much how...Seems to me that if there is a stand-alone, bootable system that can make (AND restore) an image, that should be sufficient.  I agree with the above comments on some of the commercial image backup tools.  Many of them have limited "free" versions that might do what you want.

Also, consider th built in windos OS  tools to make recovery images - especially in Win 7/8....they can also be used with bootable recovery disks.

Scott

Macrium Reflect has the ability to create a rescue media under the Other Tasks menu. Says Create Rescue Media.

This video starts to talk about how "Create Rescue Media" works

Starts around 3:50 minutes
