There is an interesting release from Microsoft to permit Windows 7+ users to run older apps under Windows XP.

At first looks like a compatibility layer, but inside the download file comes a nice VHD file already packed with Windows XP ready to be used.

The download link is here: https://www.microsof...ls.aspx?id=8002

After getting the executable, use 7zip to extract the contents. I've used the command line so it can auto-detect the compression formats. Then look inside at the file /sources/xpm and extract that one too, its where the VHD file is found. Then you see the 1.1 Gb file decompressed that you just need to add an extension .VHD to use from VirtualBox.

The full set of instructions with screenshots can be found here: http://www.makeuseof...m-microsoft-si/

Have fun!

Just to mention, if the mouse doesn't seem to work OK then try to get the installation done using only the keyboard.

After that step is done, you need to install the Virtual Box addons to make the mouse work. When rebooting the machine it was hanging a few times on its own, so when you manually reboot you will be moving forward the installation process when it is unable to reboot the machine on its own. :-)

Umm.....I don't think this is new news. XP Mode has been available for Windows 7 for like, many years now. But if they released an XP Mode for Windows 10, now *THAT* would be news. And even still, what is the point of packaging it in a VHD? So it can be run in a VM or booted standalone? I really don't see the point, I people can already set up an XP VM easily enough. Now, if it functioned as an actual subsystem (kind of like the Unix/Linux subsystem for Windows), now that would be cool, as long as it integrates in a seamless way.

Yep, not really to be posted under "news":

Version: 1.3.7600.16423
File Name: WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe
                 WindowsXPMode_N_en-us.exe
Date Published: 10/19/2009

Old related threads here on reboot.pro, including instructions to extract the .vhd and use it on other VM's:

Wonko has implied in the past that he is in the 70s range at a minimum, so he probably doesn't remember a lot of it. Aging generally deteriorates memory. As for finding it, it's called searching. Ya know, like searching Google or whatever. That's how you find a digital needle in a digital haystack.

I can make, thanks to my contiguity with Wonko, these five rather accurate statements::

1) he is far from being 70

2) he is grumpy (in an absolute way) and old (in a relative one)

3) he is also cheap (but this is unrelated)

4) his little gray cells are in almost perfect efficiency, and surely a lot better than those of many (if not most) much younger peeps

5) there is a reason why he is "The Finder"
