It's not stupid at all, but maybe a little "vague" or "queer". (no offence intended of course :))

What makes you think that IMDISK can be used  to create RAM disk on the RAM of a REAL machine? :dubbio:

Most probably you have read something about this use or you tried it and it worked :).

Now, what makes you think that IMDISK canNOT be used  to create RAM disk on the RAM of a Virtual Machine (which by design is or should be *something* representing an EXACT replacement for a REAL machine) ?

BUT, more than the above, if you could explain WHY you would want to create such a ramdisk, or - even better - describe your actual FINAL goal it might be possible to understand if creating such a ramdisk actually makes sense or not, if there are better ways to reach your final goal, etc.

The actual answer to your question:

I want to use ImDisk to create RAM disk on the RAM of a virtual machine (VMware).

I can do this ?.

is:

YES.

but it won't :( - I believe - particularly help you in reaching the *whatever* final goal you are after.

Hello,

As I am a French old with great difficulty in English, I try to make short sentences.

And, perhaps, it is why these sentences are a little "vague" or "queer".

Currently, we use Imdisk on physical servers "real" for session management of our users of our web services.

With this solution, we have greatly improved the problem of access time I/O disk and the fluidity of our websites.

We want to do the same with virtual machine (VMware version 5.1u3).

And, we don't have virtual machine to test.

It is why i ask this question.

I hope to have been more understandable.

Thank you.

Yes :).

There is no reason - in theory - why the IMDISK should not be working from inside a VM, then - specifically - it might work (or might not) in the exact specific VM setup (VMware nowadays has more VM products that stars in the sky) you will be using. (but normally IMDISK works fine inside *any* VM)

The whole point might be if the (relatively) slow IMDISK is a suitable choice or something VMware specific (such as CBRC) would be better or whether it would make better performance to use a ramdisk created on the host and used like (say) a shared folder. or even. depending on both host OS and virtualized OS and actual host hardware , in theory with enough RAM the whole VM could be created inside a RAMdisk... or if runnign Linux as Host  one could use CompCache/zRam or similar techniques....
