I don't know about you guys, but whenever traveling around with the car I find that the GPS has a limited range of maps.

Looking around the Android market I found a nifty offline navigation app (freeware). Was able to directly download the maps to travel around most of western Europe (Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium) under 2Gb.

Size wasn't so much an issue, mini-SD card has 32Gb space.

Offline navigation by car from point A to point B works as expected regardless of country. An extra feature that I found useful is to find gas stations and supermarkets next to your location. Another unexpected feature was the 3D visualization, it actually populates the map with the buildings where you are passing. To some point helps to orientate better.

Other maps exist for global reach, certainly a keeper if traveling overseas.

Quirks

- Sometimes it didn't allow to type the house number. I can choose the street I want to find but couldn't pinpoint to house number. Not always was the case but happened two times.

- Maps are sometimes not very clear. For example, doesn't help to distinguish water from solid land.

- Voice indications need work. Sometimes

Download

The name for this app is "BE-ON-ROAD": https://play.google....=cz.aponia.bor3

Alternatives?

What other (freeware) apps from Android are you using for offline navigation between different borders?

As I have a true GPS device (Mio), I didn't tested in my car the android applications, but just in case, I installed MapFactor Navigator and Mappy GPS Free. It seems that this latter is only available for France though.

This topic is very interesting, because this kind of free applications is not very common. And when we have a connection very limited in amount of data per month, an online GPS can hardly be used.

Just catching up on unread posts...I use CoPilot here in the USA.  I think they have european maps too...Basics are "free", but for minimal $$ they add voice turns, traffic, etc.  And can tie into google for searching things like restaurants...

While google maps is fine for what it is, I hate using a lot of data to keep it running "live", and for some reason, I always loose connection just when I need it most, so off-line maps are a must.
