@alacran and @antonino61

Thanks for all the useful info. You both have a lot of experience in reducing Windows footprint.

I hope that may be one day Microsoft will realise that it is a bad idea to blow up Windows 10x64 that much ..

They could come at least with an option to install the Core or their Full version.

On the other hand Windows History has shown that Windows Size is always growing instead of being leaner and smarter .....

From my post No. 73

I know for RAM booting it is better a Wimboot install, but in this case my Win10 1909 (filedisk bootable) is a full install on a 6 GB VHD (fixed size) including Office 2003 + compatibily pakages, FireFox browser + other prgrams, and also some portable programs but without page file, (CR)Apps, drivers or AV and it's installed on Compact 4K mode (native on Win10) and fully defragmented with Defraggler (I usually run it from a 32 GB fast MicroSD +USB 3.0 adapter).:

Total used space on the VHD before reduction: 4.92 GB

Total used space on the VHD after WinSxS reduction: 3.97 GB

As you can see it fits fine on a 6 GB VHD (using less space than a Wimboot VHD + source WIM file couple), and space comsumption can be reduced using let's say a 5 GB fixed VHD or even less consumed space on the USB device using a expandable VHD

It is now on a 5 GB VHD with 1 GB free after running base_winsxs.cmd from cdob,  about required space, I think this can beat any 1.5 GB Wimboot VHD, + coupled source Wim.
And keeping 4K automatic compression of new added files.

GUI for wimlib use wimlib-clc, and remember there is a new version (1.13.2) of wimlib here.

VHD_WIMBOOT makes use of wimlib, but for Apply I have at the moment only WimBoot Or Normal Standard mode using Checkbox.

Apply in Compact mode with 4K or LZX compression is not yet implemented, but I will add these Compact mode options in next version, since they are so useful  :)

I can Add a ComboBox for the different Apply modes .....

I suggested this to you long time ago my friend, see mi old post:

Spoiler

I think following info is not nessesary for you, but just in case remember Compact mode should apply only to the final VHD and only for standard installs, not for Wimboot.

You are right, but at that time I only saw the disadvantage of compact mode. I am sorry for that.

Now I think that save spacing advantage of Compact mode is important enough to add Compact mode 4K and LZX options when you Apply not in wimboot mode   :)

anyway, in the meantime, I found picpick among my portables, so I did not see any reason for keeping my system's snipping tool. after all the necessary cleaning, I repeated the "baking" of the various scenarios and repeated the tests with performance test. this time I also added initial used spaces. here u go:

ps: I still have not found any windows subfolder to delete or junction out to ram, though. Any idea on anybody else's part?

As I don't want to hijack this thread talking more extensively about Compact installs, I'm thinking in open a new thread dedicated only to that subject. See: http://reboot.pro/to...-mode-installs/

I do not think there is any hijacking, but if u do, pls do. an opinion on the findings in my different scenarios would be more than welcome, though.

I respect your work and your point of view, but I thinks we are looking for very different goals.

You prefer RAMbooting, and use it as your everyday system, and your goal is to make the Wimboot VHD the smaller possibe, and don't care about portability.

I don't intend to use Wimboot VHDs as my everyday OS, I prefer portability for RAMboot Wimboot VHDs and same for Compact mode installs trying to get the smaller size on both but without sacrificing portability, there are 5 different PCs at my home, and my idea is have a better tool than a WimPE to use for repairs.

So my comments interfere with yours and your comments interfere with my comments, then it is better I start a new topic, to not confuse future readers.

well, something just better than winpe looks a little too little for a system that scores best even as routine and production work. those who relinquish wimrambooting for ordinary daily usage, well, I hope they do it in favor of any better. I have the same picture for another 19041 build where vhd.gz + wim combo scores best too. I do not think one reason for a choice should necessarily exclude another for the same choice, but in the end, everybody's got their own taste.

hi wimb,

here is something u might find useful for ur next version of wimboot:

wimoptimize d:\wimboot\install.wim --compress=LZX:999 - this will strip a few kbs from the existing wim, but test results are significantly better.

wimoptimize d:\wimboot\install.wim --solid unfortunately exceeds wof.sys requirements, so it will not make pointers on the applying stage; it will only transfer full files to the vhd.

I then reapplied the image and got better results all over the tests and a more pronounced overall "victory" by vhd.gz as ramdisk over all other scenarios.

Before first install, first thing is remove all (CR)Apps and other unwanted things from the original WIM file using MSMG Toolkit,  in order to reduce  your WIM file used for installs.

After Removal of All WindowsApps and All SystemApps in the original WIM file with MSMG Toolkit

I got the following result for a Mini 10x64 2004 Compact LZX with reduced WinSxS

Attached File  Min10x64_2004_LZX-2020-07-28_193457.jpg   179.99KB   0 downloads

a reduction of 13.300 files and about 1 GB in Used Size and WIM as compared to Step M_04   M_04_2020-07-26_191217.jpg

Still there is a lot to be removed such as Microsoft.NET .....But anyway making progress towards Mini 10x64  :)

But probably a Full Win10x64 WimBoot of Used Size about 500 MB in VHD will be more useful .....as Portable OS + Prgs like Office booting from RAMDISK

Attached File  Min10x64_2004.zip   414.14KB   10 downloads

Well my fried with MSMG Toolkit it is possible to remove some things, but it is also possible to add/install some Redistributables as Direct X 9c, Visual C++ Runtimes and .Net 3.5 etc., that may be needed for some old drivers or old programs and for old equipment, in the case the user wants to reporpouse it and bring it back to life, it works from 7 to 10.

I'm agree with you 100 % a Full Win10x64 WimBoot of Used Size about 500 MB in VHD will be more useful, but if you have to deal with PCs with less than 4 GB of RAM, then Compact 4K Reduced become a very good option: http://reboot.pro/to...ls/#entry215543

Also the WimPE s will continue being a good option for certain tasks.

I always think the more options the better, this gives the freedom to select the appropiate solution for each need.

This is not a competition to make an OS install so little that then becomes only a curiosity. and not useful for anythig.

I totally agree with alacrán but on one point: better is to do with portables than with system-integrated stuff, for 2 reasons: 1) portables can start from and finish to drives other than c:\ and 2) they do not interfere so much with the system. directx and vc++ stuff goes without saying, alacrán is dead right there, as he is with all the software that is very dear to the user. the rest, better out of c:\ than in c:\. curiosity, I don't know, I have been using this reduced scenario for years as a normal system and it is as it was from the first day. that is the real conquest of it all. so, I suggest everybody should find out in advance what they do need and what they do not, keep a fresh copy of a pristine or near pristine vhd.vhd for new vital software that might require what has been taken out.

powershell, I keep it integrated despite I found one portable version, because total functional equivalence cannot be guaranteed. for the rest, I have seen I can rely on portables. these things should be assessed on a per-person basis, though.

And after all don't tell me both of you don't enjoy making all this experiments and wimb making also his programs, giving non advanced users the possibility to make things they may never imaginate even in their dreams, the easier way and requiring very little effort and knowledge.

We are here because we like to share ideas, and also get ideas from the other members, and adapt those ideas for new experiments.

not many ppl know the forum exists. I tell everybody at my job. those who logged on enthuse at it, which is good. When I tell them about the achievements, some ask "can I do the same as well?", and I reply "yes, but u have to do a bit of reading beforehand", and they go "oh, no...".

This forum is well known by all people who are realy interested on the topics it contents, also many times I had made many searches using google or other searchers and I get links to reboot.pro, so there is no problem to find the info if you are looking for it.

People usually buy a machine (kesktop or laptop) and it has the OS allredy installed and ready to work, they don't care about anything else, and remember you loose the warranty if you change the installed OS, as installing some Linux.

By the way talking about linux there are pleantly of distros capables to run from a USB device, and they may also run from Ram or installed on a internal HD, or a portable MicroSD, in fact I heve tested several of them and there are some very good, almost all distros come with OpenOffice  or FreeOffice and FireFox or the open version of google chrome. This a free option to the usual OS and it is ready to install and run, then many people also prefer to just install a Linux and forget about the telemetry a bloated usual OS has, for general porpose they work fantastic.

You could try Linux Lite or Linux Mint Cinnamon edition, this are my favorites and I also have them in my MicroSD, they are also very useful as Linux systems don't care about all the files and forders permisions or restrictions made by the usual OS if you want to copy let's say my Documents folder to a new HD when the old one fails, and you tried first with a WinPE with no luck, unless the drive is encripted or there are phisically damaged sectors exactly where the info you want to recover is located.
