My XP test I did a bit ago:
VM Software: Oracle's VirtualBox
1st V-HDD - NTFS XP Home installed
2nd V-HDD - Fat32, nothing installed
Acronis Home 2010 had no problem at all making the NTFS partition image. I checked the boxes to copy sector by sector and preserve the boot info, but left the one to copy blank sectors unchecked.

Is there any similar tool for creating a universal image for windows 7 too? An alternative to SPAT for W7?
Thanks

This is such a good thing to have....
2. Took me almost 3 hours to get my old sp2 cd installed and FULLY upated to latest sp3 etc on my test machine.
3. Less than 20 minutes to boot back into windows with ALL but 1 driver installed!!!!!
Cant wait to try this out on other machines - THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
THINGS TO MENTION
1.) I used a PRE slipstreamed ISO (with some drivers) to install windows first time round and that never completed properly.....
so if you having trouble make sure you use a CLEAN installer of XP SP1, 2 or 3.
Now to try the new 7 image !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With these new drivers got a lot of errors with missing files where as with earlier versions was ok. Testing for real on third party machine so will let you know!
I tried it only on VM so far. But I'm gonna deploy it in other systems in a couple of days too. It would be great if you tell us your findings and opinion about this new driver pack.
P.S I put SPAT in desktop but after deployment it wasn't deleted from desktop.
Is copying it to sysprep folder the right way?

Maybe 15/20 prompts along the lines of "this driver blah blah hasnt been certified by microsoft" do you want to install it anyway YES or NO. Also a few missing file errors aswell. I never got any of that with the older versions?
After a lot of "yessing" about, the image went down fine and there were NO driver's left to install. However although everything seemed fine I am still bit concerned. The guy who I did this for will be in later so I'm sure he'll tell me any problems.
Still impressed with 25 mins for sp3 FULLY uptodate with antiv and basic softwares. Brilliant.
I'm having a lot of ideas about this.
PS. When I was preparing this image I first tried Microsoft Security Essentials as a nice bit of antiv for "a customer" to get started with. It told me SPAT was a virus and completely broke the sysprep process!!!!???

I tried this method and it worked fine. I just have a question... i wonder if this software (SPAT) has te ability to detect the HAL to the destination computer.
You know, sometimes i get older computers (pentium 3 or so) and it would be great if i just had to have one Image working with different HAL.
Thanks

What version of SPAT did you use?
The 6.0.7.0 Final was not automatically deleted (a bug IMO). I think your problem is about driver signing which SPAT should have taken care of too.
I tried latest SPAT+latest driver pack on VM. I saw just a prompt. It was about VM driver which the source had a newer dll file than the driver pack. No driver signing nags.
Please let us know your other experiences if you have other deployments too. I'm almost finished with my VM now and have to deploy it very soon. Thanks in advance.

The image is working fine though, still testing on VM.
Apart from this, I personally think SPAT beta 5 is better than 6.0.7.9 .
The Final 6.0.7.9 removes some items in autorun section. Can somebody confirm?
TIA
