Hello again all. I've come back to getting explorer.exe working again now that I know how to look for dependencies properly.

 

This will enable you to launch a basic (ie, no taskbar/desktop) explorer.exe instance. Done in 64-bit WinPE 10.0.586.0 codebase but probably works on other architectures/versions too.

 

I will update the thread as I make progress with other explorer elements.

 

CLSIDs required

 

Not all of these may be necessary, and some will be in your base image. These are just all the 'hits' I found.

Progress as of this update: Taskbar and desktop launching, taskbar start menu/search/clock hover/desktop hover/taskbar hover not working, but taskbar itself is working fine. Dwm.exe not working yet so no wallpaper.

Why bother with getting Explorer working? There are much better file managers out there that are free and open source, and aren't resource hogs and crashy/glitchy like Explorer is. My personal favorites are Q-Dir and Far Manager. A much better effort would be to focus on getting SysWOW64/32 bit programs working in Win10PE.

 

 

@Wonko: Yes, really. I'm well aware of spleenharvester's thread that you linked. AFAIK noone has gotten SysWOW64 fully working in 10PE. I just think that s/he should focus more effort on that and forget about Explorer. Explorer sucks as both a shell and a file manager. I really do wish that projects like ReactOS would hurry up and create something that is stable and ready for use by the masses, so that Microsoft's proprietary Windows would have a viable (Windows-like, not Linux or OSX, etc) competitor. Of course ReactOS will probably never become nearly as big due to MS's iron grip, but still.....

 

I'm not actually using Explorer myself since I consider FreeCommander w/third party taskbar to be more stable and appropriate for my image. This was more for experiment's sake, hence why I haven't been working on it since. 

 

Also, to what extent is the SysWOW64 implementation I described in my thread not "fully working"? I've been using it on my own image for months now and haven't had any trouble running 32-bit apps. As per the thread it is basically just a reverse engineering of the SysWOW64 implementation in the Win10PE SE project.

To be fair, once set aside the ramblings/usually negative attitude by Anonvendetta, the given thread misses a way to reproduce your experiments as in there there is described something, the contrary of it, and the contrary of said contrary.

So - given that it now works fine (or almost fine) - maybe you could (when and if you have time for this) put together a reproducible set of steps or procedure to replicate.

I have to re-follow those steps when I'm updating my codebase to a newer version of Windows (will have to do this on the Anniversary update too so will check if it still works then)

 

I would have bundled all the regkeys etc into one file to make it easier but they are, of course, going to change when Windows versions change!

I just need to copy the files attached and the add the reg files?

I need this because any of the file managers i try in my WinPE doesn't copy files

I don't know why, i just have the simple and basic WinPE environment.

As i say in an other place in this forum, i try to collect information about winpe and adding explorer in winpe. This collect is based on the work of many guys in internet. i put all information in a pdf. I write somes powershell scripts to customise a boot.wim.

In pdf, i try to explain how you can modify scripts or your constructor to put syswow64 ( a chinese guy find that winpe doesn't not create to object and find a way to create them), an other site explaiin how to feel the keys WOW6432Node and winsxs...

I know this is old, but this was the only thread I've found that was focusing on getting explorer to work in WinPE. All current solutions just use 3rd party utils.

Does anyone know what CLSIDs are needed to get a functioning explorer?
