hard drive wont initialize

I have a maxtor hard drive i formated from an old computer.
I am trying to load vista on it. But i cant initialize the drive,
Why????

Hi,

You need to check whether the hard-disk is inserted in the master or slave mode. Put it in the right mode and then check in BIOS, if it is detected in the BIOS then simply install the new OS and it will work fine. Give some more details for better solution.

Thanks arcksonn. I've tried it as slave,master,I hooked it up usb to my other computer and disk management see's it but when I right click and hit initialize a pop up box shows up saying did not initialize.
I don't know what to try now
