Laptop won't boot HDD XP

win xp boot

Best Answer alastair70 , 20 November 2013 - 05:03 PM

Thanks for that you have given me plenty of reading to do. The laptop came with Vista which keep crashing so I went back to XP. It has been a great OS and I think after what you have said I'll stay with it instead of upgrading to Win 7. Everything seems to be running well now so I will say a final thankyou to you for all your patience and time you have spent helping me fix this problem. Have a great day

Thanks for this, I have added the lines to the boot.ini and will try it shortly. here is the link to the MyCDrive & MyFdrive http://jmp.sh/b/HixsGKPmeV93hLwDWDGF

The only copy of ntbtlog.txt is password protected in the folder F:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Quarantine\Log-0000.zip

I searched both C: & F: and this is the only copy. I have upload the file here is the link http://jmp.sh/b/HixsGKPmeV93hLwDWDGF I haven't a clue what the password is, I have tried all my normal security passwords and it won't open..

I'll report back shortley with results of what happens when i try the new entries to the boot.ini

okay, Here are the result from booting the laptop in the various modes.

XP Pro :- Hdd light flickered twice then nothing, no messages

Safe Mode:- Same as above

Bootlog Mode

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\hal.dll

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\KDCOM.DLL

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\BootVid.dll

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\config\system

Then nothing

Bootlog Command Line:

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\hal.dll

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\KDCOM.DLL

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\BootVid.dll

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\config\system

Then nothing

Thinking about this I assume that the boot text file you want will now be on the laptop drive so i will put it back in the desktop and get it for you

That log seems like it has issues with the actual Registry.

multi(0)disk(0)partition(2)\Windows\system32\config\system

You could try making a backup copy of F:\Windows\System32\Config\ folder "as is" (just in case) and copy to it the files that you have in F:\Windows\ERUNT\JRT "system" and "software".

They are surely a backup made on 14/10/2013, so it is "recent enough".

(and see if it gets past that line at boot)

ok it seems to deleted some links, I had installed open office 4 and that has unassociated it self with files on my desktop. Also I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and it has failed to update itself, saying it "Failed to check the black list of keys", which I've never seen or heard of before

Can I just ask why you have felt the need to pick up on points with which you haven't been involved with? It is not as if you have even contributed anything to helping with thi as problem except to nit pick and not even be bothered to read the entire topic. If you feel you can contribute please feel free, however I am under the impression that forum etiquette is to only follow one person once they start helping, so anything you do contribute I would be asking Wonka if I should proceed with your contribution first

Oww, come on kids :), no need to quarrel, saddlejb is a good guy (after all ;)) and he is meaning to help (though whether he succeeds at it can be debatable :whistling:).

We are all here in the same Community to try and help each other....

@alastair70

What we (actually you) have is this situation:

  • for *whatever* reasons the blackout (or whatever) interrupted the OS while it was writing to the Registry and the result evidently is that the Registry is corrupted
  • you can try (still with the disk connected to the desktop) to leave the "system" file as is and restore the original (the one that was in C:\Windows\System32\config\) "software" file, I was a bit "beyond the strict need" ;) when I suggested you to replace BOTH the "system" and "software" files, it is very possible that only the "system" file had issues, and that the "software" one is/was OK
  • if the "original" "software file works, it will likely be "enough" for OpenOffice and possibly even for the "missing links"
  • if the Kaspersky has been installed or updated (not the definition files, the actual "engine") after the 14/10/2013 it is more likely that it won't "work as before" as usually AntiVirus software use any (mostly senseless) services and whatnots, that may well have settings/keys/whatever in the "system" file

Now the problem is this.

During booting the Registry (actually the files composing it, as the Registry is "built on the fly" from the backing files in a later stage of booting) is accessed by the NTLDR (or however from an "early booting" file) that may have a "simplified" Registry file reader/parser.

I doubt that the "system" file is "sound" and has a setting that prevents booting (as this is not what a blackout might do), it is more likely that one or more "key" keys (pardon me the pun) or hive got corrupted and that the NTLDR cannot parse it's contents.

Now, it is possible that a fully booted OS can actually *somehow* access the "system" file (offline) and "repair" it, or a tool like the Registry compactor coming with ERUNT can anyway read it.  :dubbio:

We can try and see what can be done about it or more simply you can attempt uninstalling and reinstalling those few apps that you either installed after 14/10/2013 or that however are not working now.

Trying to restore only the "software" file is however a "little or no cost" attempt that is IMHO worth trying anyway.

Wonko

Good Morning Wonko, Thankyou once again for your most valuable help and assistance I am most grateful.

I copied |system32\config\software back to the laptop and it started to boot, went past the boot menu and then showed the windows logo before giving me a BSOD with the following info

BSOD: STOP C0000218

Registry file failure \systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE or its log is corrupt, absent or not writable

So I take it we have found that software is corrupt. I will take the laptop drive out and copy over the backup from ERNT folder again.

Does this mean i will be best uninstalling Kaspersky and reinstalling it along with Open Office, although Open Office does open it just hasn't associated itself with its files?

Sorry about my rant to the other guy, it is just he seemed to be picking on the smallest of details without contributing, and as i said once i have started dealing with one person and we have already made so much progress I wouldn't want to deal with someone else as i could end up screwing things up more than already.

Can you tell me why I can only make 10 more posts? (It is in a green post above the post editor)

Thanks again you really are a star and I am most grateful

Alastair :good:

Not yet/Not definitely.
A "valid" Registry file needs not an accompanying .log normally, a (partially) corrupted one may need it's companion .log file (which is used to correct the "base" file.
You may want to try again copying both the "software" and "software.log" from the backup you made (of course no guarantees of working "better" or working at all ).

But - all in all - you'd probably better just use the "working" software file from 14/10/2013. :fine:

Does this mean i will be best uninstalling Kaspersky and reinstalling it along with Open Office, although Open Office does open it just hasn't associated itself with its files?

Well, it's up to you (and depends mostly on how the system behaves now), if all it's missing in OpenOffice are the file associations, it would of course be easier to manually re-add them, but this "symptom" may indicate that *something else* is broken/invalid/missing in OpenOffice and till now you simply did not happen to notice it.
About kaspersy, yes, I would say that re-installing it is the best (simpler/faster/less prone to issues when compared to attempting a repair) choice.

This is news to me :w00t:

I think i will try the working software from October and reinstall Kaspersky & Open Office first. When the drive is back in the laptop is there anything I should be trying to help improve the system?

Naah, just the usual Registry cleaning/checking, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Ah, I see :).
It is most probably an "anti-flood" mechanism, basically you are a relatively new user and have posted several times in a short time after your joining the board, the general idea is to avoid that spamming bots make more than a given amount of posts in a given time.
You have 9 left till 1:00 PM, after that time you will probably be allowed some more, and then you will be probably be promoted to "no -limit" user.

Guess what, my new dvd drive has turned up in the post. I am upable to connect to the internet, which is the same problem i had 6 weeks ago. I fixed it then by running RougeKiller and ADWCleaner, I am currently running them to see if that fixes the problem.

Given all the problems i have had, do you thing it would be worth reinstalling windows completely?

If so what method would you use to completley wipe the C drive and do a fresh install, I am aware if i leave it to windows it doesn't clear the drive completly

I have fixed the unable to connect to the internet problem with RougeKiller. I've re-installed Kaspersky and it is currently updating. I will remove and re-install Open Office next to see if it fixes the reassociation problem. Bar that it seems to be running okay.

I've not reinstalled windows for a few years, normally i used to reinstall every 12-18 months. Given I have an older system and support for XP finishes in April next year should I stick with XP or would my system run any quicker with Win7, if son which version would you suggest?

What I normally use (to clean systems from "strange things" in the Registry) are:

Combofix: http://www.bleepingc...nload/combofix/

HijackThis: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/

RegSeeker: http://www.hoverdesk.net/

You might want to nonetheless try running them.

Do not confuse "clean" with "wipe", they are two very different things (when it comes to hard disks/filesystems), it is something that usually is not fully understood/well known.

A computer uses a filesystem, which basically is a "structure".

I tend to use a book comparison to explain the matter (this is about FAT, but NTFS is not that much different in abstract):
http://www.forensicf...536153/#6536153

For all practical purposes, once you have wiped a very few "key" sectors/locations, you have a perfectly "clean" disk/drive.

This doesn't mean that completely wiping a disk has not it's merits, only that it is often UNneededly performed, and in some cases (more than a single 00 pass) also stupidly performed.

The thing about XP support ending in 2014 is essentially some FUD spread in order to convince all the people (that righteously find no need whatever to update) to get Windows 8/8.1.

The world will NOT end on April 2014, rest assured.

The point of using "new" MS OS on old hardware is m00t, actually one should get the previous release of what is given with your PC (provided that suitable drivers exist for the hardware) in order to have a "smoother" or "faster" experience.

http://www.msfn.org/...ted-until-2019/

http://www.msfn.org/...til-2019/page-4

Invariably a "later" OS will need more processor, more RAM and more space on hard disk, and each of the stupid files in it will be larger and will take more time to be transferred from hard disk to RAM and viceversa, if you upgrade your OS on same hardware (as well provided that suitable drivers exist) you will get an overall slower, more bloated system. (there are exceptions but they are very rare)
